In South Korea I found that the "unsanitary" odor was coming grom the gutters & deduced they only have ONE sewer...it was bad.
I don't see the humor??? "Sanitary is much better than the alternative...I would think!!

Sanitary as distinct from Storm or Stormwater sewer. In some cities, they are combined, sometimes resulting in filthy overflows.

Something like that is happening with manhole covers in CA. The quotation I posted, from a newspaper in India, said that gender specific terms should be avoided. Instead of "Mens' Room" and "Ladies' Room," the signs will say simply "Room." You will have to take your chances.
I was in a dive on the west coast and needed to use the men's room. It was down a hall and there were two doors. One said MEN with an arrow below it pointing to the right. Next to that door was a door with a sign on it that said WOMEN and an arrow pointing to the left.
i wasn't going to wait around agonizing about which one to us so I went into the one labeled Men. It didn't make any difference because there was no wall between them anyway. If someone has been there they can reveal what they found inside, and I will leave you to find out for yourselves.

Ah, so there's a difference! I thought "Sanitary" meant that the goal was to make conditions in town sanitary.
Yep. Storm Sewers are exactly what they sound like...for rainwater. Here in Connecticut if you build a new house you can no longer have the roof drain leaders coming from your gutters emptying onto the ground or splash blocks or water spreaders. They must go underground and be connected to the storm sewer line.
Sanitary sewers get anything else that comes from your house. Your sinks, bathtubs and toilets are all connected to sanitary sewer lines. Eventually all of that stuff ends up at a sewage treatment plant.
