I have used Raynox lenses with great success and the results are sharp. DOF is determined by the magnification on the sensor. When you use extension tubes the effective aperture in decreased giving more depth of field. Raynox lenses do not change the aperture. No matter what lenses and other equipment you use macro photos and mags > 1X are difficult and focus stacking usually is desirable.
I have used everything like reversing lens in front of my macro lens have experimented with multiple diopter lens have used over 100mm of tubes with a 100mm macro lens also used full set of tubes with laowa 100mm 2X macro have shot from 1x up to about 4x the Raynox DCR 250 just does not suit my style of shooting moving insects handheld are too aggravating for me to do stacking so 2x is going to be about my limits. I get a smidge over 2x with full set of tubes and once I replace my Laowa 2x lens will get that natively if I was using mirrorless would have more options but Pentax full frame has me limited.
