According to a Sony executive, cell phone cameras will be better than DSLRs by 2024. I thought that was an interesting comment. By 2024, DSLR sales will be very low, and new models will probably be non-existent. When was the last time Sony made a DSLR? They can denigrate cameras that they don't offer.

Of course, "better" is a word with unlimited meaning. I can't wait till 2024 to see what cell phones are like.

The last time Sony made the DSLR was a long time ago. Before they made the SLT series. They abadoned the DSLR when they made the SLT series which took the A mount lenses.

I think that we have to take this comment with a grain of salt. There is a lot of new technology going into cell phone cameras, and AI is making inroads into this segment in a way we do not see in MILCs (yet). By 2024, the most recent DSLR model will be almost a decade old--there definitely will not be any new models. So it easy to see the technology leap. Whether a cell phone in 2024 will have better resolution than a Nikon D850 definitely is questionable. But in terms of technology it will be superior.

While Sony has not developed new DSLR models in a decade, they stopped selling models like A99ii and A77ii only a couple of years ago. By 2024, Canon and Nikon may stop selling DSLRs as well. They already have been thinning out the models they offer.

I would not call that "denigrating" DSLRs. It is simply an educated opinion and prediction acknowledging what is going on in the industry: there is a lot of innovation in cell phone technology while it has stopped in DSLR technology many years ago.

That is correct. The use of the word "better" is too vague. Better could relate to either usability or quality, and perhaps other things as well.

I was at Yellowstone last week. There are photographers using spotting scopes using cheap smartphone attachment brackets getting "better" images of distant wildlife than the Nikanon shooters with monstrous lenses. Maybe not better in a pixel peeping sense, but certainly better in a composition/framing sense.

Don't understand what you are conveying here. Are iPhone shooters using a spotting scope to extend the focal length of their wide angle phone lenses ???? Near as I can determine the iPhone 13 Pro Max has three lenses: ultra wide angle, wide angle, and a 3x zoom. I fail to too see how that is remotely useful to photograph wildlife that needs a 600mm+ lens reach.

So far I have not seen ANYONE do a comparison photo between a phone and any camera.

I will try to explain by a story. I was standing in a line along the road at Yellowstone getting footage of a bear eating a bison it killed. It filled about less than a quarter of my viewfinder at 800 mm. Next to me was a guy who asked, "You see the eagle in the tree wait its turn?" Not even close to an opportunity for me.

His daughter was busy with his Nikon so he set up a spotting scope on a tripod, scanned the tree line and spotted the eagle that I could not see at all. He snapped a bracket to his scope with what he said is available for cheap on the internet. Then he snapped his iPhone to the bracket. I don't know which of the three phone lenses he used or how he set the phone. The eagle perfectly filled the phone screen and he pushed the button to record Apples best video quality.

That was a couple years ago. On subsequent Yellowstone trips I've seen more than a few photographers doing this. I have not yet bought a spotting scope. But relative to this topic, it may be that for this father, he had decided his phone was better than the DSLR he relegated to his daughter.
