If he would have questioned an old fart like me, he might have received a few good answers. LOL

There are always going to be unknowledgeable people like these in the population. I think the the producers of this video have an agenda and have used selective edits to create the perception that our education system has produced a vacuously minded generation. We may find some of the answers amusing, but just remember we don’t know anything about the creators, who they are, who funded them, and the process used in editing these clips.

Where were the teachers?

They certainly picked the air head as their subject but I have seen some almost as bad.
I taught in Los Angeles for over 30 years Jr & Sr High.
I don't count the new immigrant kids who just hadn't had a chance to learn many facts yet. But teaching history and geography (I always included some geography in my history classes.) I had students born in the US who didn't know things like "What ocean is that west of LA?" or "What is the first foreign country you enter traveling south from the western US?" and I had some who thought Canada and Los Angeles were states.
Well I included those facts in my lessons. But I had some students that a few weeks later were back to not being able to answer those questions. They were so bad the other students would freak out over it. Once a confirmed gang member who was in school because it was part of his probation lost his temper and asked to address the 11th grade US History class he was assigned to. "What is wrong with you fools? Half of you bitch and complain about the lessons and mess them up while I only attend and study because I don't want to go back to Juvie if I don't get at least a D. I usually wait until the silent reading (15 minutes at the beginning of class-a school policy) to review yesterday's lessons and then I make B-'s on the quizes while half of you flunk them. If I can do it anyone can, so shut up and do some studying and learn something." Then he said thanks to me for letting him vent and sat down. Half the class sat in stunned silence and the other half snickered, giggled and outright laughed at the stunned half while giving thumbs up, air high fives and "right on Homie" to the gang member.

In the break room crying in the corner and wishing they had a good stiff drink. One year three of our young 1st-3rd year teachers just announced they had had all they could take and were going to the academy to become cops. At the last faculty meeting of the year one said "I will deal with the same kids but I will have a badge and gun." One went to LAPD, one to the LA Sheriff's and one to the CHP.

That same year that school had 4 teachers recruited from Spain to teach the Spanish only kids English as a Second Language and by the end of the first semester three of them had packed up and gone back to Spain. One commented that even though he was making a lot more than in Spain it wasn't worth it and he could not understand how most of us could keep teaching without becoming truck drivers or something else. "You are a lot braver than me!"

I'm tired of the teacher bashing. And I'm tired of uneducated bureaucrats trying to tell educators how and what they should teach. I know teachers - they are hard-working, dedicated people. I'm sure there are a few deadbeats in the profession as there are a few deadbeats in any organization, but for the most part our teachers are well trained and dedicated to their profession. In my area, the major obstacle to student success in school is poverty and absentee/uninvolved parents. I ask that the UHHers here not jump to conclusions about what they see in the video linked. Like I said above - the producers have an agenda. And part of that agenda is probably to eliminate public education altogether and establish a for-profit education system owned and run by corporate managers, not educators.

(I suppose I'll see y'all in the Attic after that rant)

Doesn't say much for kids attitude towards learning does it.

I very seriously believe it is not the teachers...........
Unless maybe the teachers are the "new kids" that didn't pay attention in class either.

Actually I think it says too much, but it is something we don't want to hear or believe.

Many of my students would ask why "Those kids weren't put in separate classes and shown movies and cartoons all day so the rest of us can study without having to put up with them."

Some teachers would arrange the seating to put those "I don't want to do anything." students together in the back or on the side and give them an 'E' (excellent) or 'S' (satisfactory) on their behavior and cooperation marks to go with their 'F' or sometimes 'D' in return for being quiet and not disturbing the class. If a child decided they didn't like that and caused trouble they became frequent flyers to the Dean's office while a few would always request to be moved back with the other students in return for starting to make a real effort to study and learn.
I know of one boy who went from being in that group to being an A-/B+ student in one semester. The boy was tested as "highly gifted" but lazy and only interested in cars, music, sports and girls. He changed after his Dad sent him to his Uncle's very large dairy farm in Baja for Christmas Break and he spent two shifts a day 7 days a week shoveling cow poop while being told "If you don't pass and graduate High School this is what you will do for the rest of your life. I will send you to live with your uncle full time." That boy got over his severe case of Stupidity real fast. Two years later during graduation week he came around to see all his teachers and announced he had signed up with the military for a 4 year scholarship+ROTC and 8 years active duty as an officer. "When I finish my 8 years I may go for 20 years or become a teacher."
Shovel+cow poop=motivation and an attitude change.
