They used to race them on the Hudson River. The race would start in Albany and finish in NYC. They pounded your body very badly.

What, no crashes?! Don't you know people go to the races to see the crashes!?

Actually one did flip at the far end of the lake, had an obstructed field of view. I was set up under a grove of shade trees at the other end of the course. Driver fortunately was not injured, can't say the same for his boat.

Great shots, used to do that back in the '60 s. More fun than the law allows, kind of tough on the knees if you don't plan for it.

I did too. Raced a class B hydro that belonged to the owner of the marina where my folks kept the family boat docked as a teen. It had a 10 hp Mercury with the "Quicksilver 1::1 lower unit. Had the motor housing removed for cooling and the big megaphone looking exhausts. The boat was a lot more capable than I was and had a much better success record when driven my the owner. Great fun.

It was, my friend took his 4yr old son. He was pretty excited, for about 20 minutes. LOL

Eastwood Lake! Hydro racers have torn up this lake for years. Believe it or not but the unlimiteds raced there once. A man from Dayton named Gene Whipp was very active in hydro racing and arranged for the big boats to race on Eastwood. The lake turned out to be too small and the big engines just couldn't wind out enough speed. The party and circus that follows the unlimiteds was a rousing success though and liquid refreshments were in abundance, vast abundance. The south shore was lined with fans with cans and they appreciated the show wildly. The bottom of Eastwood contains many strange objects, they weren't all boats. Thanx for the '60's type memories, lots and lots of memories..

Nice shots gcolegate1. What class are these boats? I photograph F-2 Class boats when the Bradenton River Regatta takes place in Bradenton, Fl. The F-2 boats can hit about 125 mph.

Thanks, and honestly I have no clue on their class. I read in the paper that there were boats races and just went to kill some time.
