Hi EvKar,

I know the feeling. I live in a 55+ community and am the official neighborhood photographer and videographer. When there is a community-sponsored event such as a dance, cookout, hike or charity drive, I will take photos and videos and assemble them into a brief (3-5 minute) slide show. I convert this to a YouTube video and post it on our community Facebook page. Typically I'll get over 100 views. If I'm lucky, 3 or 4 people will "like" the video. Only on rare occasions will more than 2 or3 people post a comment. Occasionally, someone I meet on my daily walk will say that they enjoyed the video. It bothered me at first that my efforts to document our events were not appreciated by a large percentage of my neighbors. Then I realized that I get a great deal of enjoyment in producing the videos and that's all the "payment" I actually need.

You could not shoot an event and then see how many miss your work. I think more would respond realizing that they shouldn't take your work for granted.

I'm sorry about that, but I've always known that I was the only one who cared about my pictures. There have been exceptions, of course, but I'm the only one I have to please, and I'm the only one who cares.

I take a lot of photos while traveling, all for my own memories. A complete set goes with my travel companion who also contributes her own photos to the set.

I've turned a few into metal prints that hang on each of our walls. If she's like me, I usually don't notice them, but every now and again one catches my focus and brings back a pleasant memory.

What happens to all of them after I die is not my problem.

You are right about when I die it not my problem. Until than I going to enjoy use film cameras; nuts to the rest of the world and what their think. If anyone wants to just write about film cameras; keep the high tech part out of writing about film cameras out. Some ideas: why you like one camera better than some other. Not from what one has read, but using the camera in the field. Problems one had in using a film camera. Does anyone want to buy or sell a film camera. How about trading cameras. Other ideas. Coming on get in the boat.

When I was in High School I started with an old Kodak 35mm camera. Never liked the rangefinder but that was so long ago I don’t remember why. I got an Exakta SLR which I liked a lot better. No parallax. A friend had a Leica and we had a friendly disagreement about which was better.

Sorry if this topic has come up before, but let me stir the pot.

Call me Disappointed…

Been taking pictures for the last 50 years or so, and there was a time that I felt my pictures meant something to someone and that someone was appreciative of receiving them. But is it just me or have any others noticed that people don’t care about the pictures that you’ve taken… it is just your thing?

I enjoy taking pictures at events like Grandkid’s sports, musical, birthday parties; and as I think they are worthy pictures, suitable for someone’s album or wall, I’ll put them on an online sharing website (Nikon Image Space) to distribute them. Via this method, I’m not able to tell if anyone makes the effort to view or download the pictures, so I’ll purposefully set the settings to not allow downloads and I’ll write in the email with the album’s link something to the effect that these are low-resolution pictures for viewing purposes, but should you desire a copy, I will do further post processing and send you a link to an album that has the higher resolution photo and is downloadable. Instead of allowing downloads of the lower resolution pictures in the first place, I handle this extra step, as it allows me to know if anyone really desires a copy or not. And this is where I’m disappointed… none of the family members desire to download any photos. I’ve even taken group pictures at family reunions… and my pictures are good to great… not of National Graphic standards (working on it)… but is it just me or do others feel that people don’t care about quality (printable) photos anymore… or collecting photos for keepsake purposes?

Yes, I know cell phones make everyone feel that they are photographers… but what gives?

I say “be true to thyself.” As long as your images please you that’s all that matters. The Critics Section can be large and sometimes mean. Continue to Post to social media and enjoy!! It’s your hobby and not your job. Best wishes.

I think there may be too much protester here. I enjoy seeing my extended family images on FaceBook but seldom save them as getting them printed may not be necessary to those who posted and those who received them. I do routinely get a set of 4X6 prints of family images about once a year and they are mailed along with Christmas presents so there is a collection if they want to archive the. If not that is their choice.
Some members of our extended family are excellent photographers and I appreciate their images but do not feel obligated to save and print their images unless I think they are something special.
since I have been a professional photographer for 60 years, I appreciate the work of other family members images that doesn't put the load on me for family images.

I'm with you all the way. I have a digital camera (D500) and I enjoy it immensely but I used to enjoy my film camera just as much. In fact, all this discussion got me to thinking about it so I got it out of the back of the closet and took a look at it. It's a Canon T70 with a 50mm lens but there are a couple of Sigma lenses that go with it. I had to order some parts and a special tool but I got it fixed up and it seems to be working fine. I have ordered a couple of rolls of 35mm film which should be in hand tomorrow. We'll see what happens from there. Should be some fun. That old camera has literally been around the world with me. My poor wife...many's the time she patiently held the case while I changed lenses or loaded a new roll of film in it. She passed away some years ago so the camera means more to me than any pictures I might take with it.

Wow... there many great responses. Thanks for sharing and enlightening me and others.
What I'm learning is that... yes, it is my hobby and to enjoy it, as such. If anyone else gains from it, that is icing on the cake. I'm also noting that I need to "up my game" if I'm going to make this hobby more appealing to others... and that is by putting together albums to give as gifts. I have been thinking about doing this for each Grandkid, as a 16th birthday gift; an album of the pictures I have taken of them as they are growing up during the previous 16 years.
Glad to see that this thread and group discussion has brought back meaning in my hobby; I hope it inspire others in this group... thank you to all you UHHs for your input.

I just took wonderful pictures at a wedding- nobody cares.
"They gots their memories!" And a few phone shots.
I have albums, some with shots from WW1. Nobody cares.
"You are descended from that couple"- yeah cute clothes.
I've got some great grand kids moving from their parents
I'm going to clean, sort, label stick them in albums and
send them to those folk so they don't get tossed..

One issue I discovered personally is rhe lack of context with many old photos in family collections.
When no one is left to explain who was in the photos.
In that case, the few that had names, location and date written on the back became more valuable.

Amen. I have a photo of some of my ancestors in front of a log cabin. I have exactly zero information about the who, when or where. Nothing on the back. All I know is that they were my family way back when - 1800s from the looks of it. I really do wish someone had made notes on the back. Now no one will ever know.

Yeah, I’ve got hundreds of pics of the family over the years. I just hope that someone has kept a few shots of me so there’ll be something to put up in the funeral home upon my demise😂

Pluses and minuses... I certainly enjoyed my film cameras: a Yashica rangefinder that saved a number of memories of Vietnam, a Canon A1 and a T90 that, like stanicon's, traveled the world with me and preserved so many great memories...

On the other hand, I don't miss not being able to see on-site how the photos looked, having to hope I got the shot. Having to worry about did the film roll really catch on the take-up reel (that sinking feeling when you reach the 39th-40th "shot", having forgotten to check the film reel is advancing). And finally, the heart racing sprint, 10 seconds of delay to get to the designated spot and turn around to get that selfie shot before you hear that shutter click.

What is stopping you putting a "package" together yourself?
Two or three years ago, I got myself a ringbinder. It contains :
- a list of people, complete with e-mail addresses, phone numbers and home addresses.
- all my banking information
- insurance information
- medical information
- what items should go to which one of my children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews
- and yes, several photos
- I also included the titles of a few pieces of music that I like very much
- The name of the pastor I would like to lead the service

Every time I think of something my sons should also know, I add it to that binder.
And yes, the two sons who are appointed executors of our wills know how to get into the house and where to find this binder!

Many of my photos are still in boxes, I'm working on them. I am also duplicating the photos so that in the end there willl be four complete sets, complete with dates, names and locations: One for each of our sons.
Yes, it is a lot of work, but I don't have to finish it in one day.
And it is mostly pleasant to look at the old photos and remember.....

Esther
