Call me Disappointed…

Been taking pictures for the last 50 years or so, and there was a time that I felt my pictures meant something to someone and that someone was appreciative of receiving them. But is it just me or have any others noticed that people don’t care about the pictures that you’ve taken… it is just your thing?

I enjoy taking pictures at events like Grandkid’s sports, musical, birthday parties; and as I think they are worthy pictures, suitable for someone’s album or wall, I’ll put them on an online sharing website (Nikon Image Space) to distribute them. Via this method, I’m not able to tell if anyone makes the effort to view or download the pictures, so I’ll purposefully set the settings to not allow downloads and I’ll write in the email with the album’s link something to the effect that these are low-resolution pictures for viewing purposes, but should you desire a copy, I will do further post processing and send you a link to an album that has the higher resolution photo and is downloadable. Instead of allowing downloads of the lower resolution pictures in the first place, I handle this extra step, as it allows me to know if anyone really desires a copy or not. And this is where I’m disappointed… none of the family members desire to download any photos. I’ve even taken group pictures at family reunions… and my pictures are good to great… not of National Graphic standards (working on it)… but is it just me or do others feel that people don’t care about quality (printable) photos anymore… or collecting photos for keepsake purposes?

Yes, I know cell phones make everyone feel that they are photographers… but what gives?

The problem is that when you began taking pictures 50 years ago, they were, if not a rarity, then at least not in abundant supply. And even then, after viewing the first 97 of your vacation pictures/slides a few people in the room (all but one) became a bit jaded. Now, we produce thousands of "photographs" every minute, a great number of them "selfies" (disgusting invented word). And each is interest in their own only, or possibly a collage of some baby doing baby things. Or a teenager interested in who broke up with whom. This has made almost everyone disinterested in your product. Even on this forum, one can take only so many shots of relatives being relative, or birds being birdy. The interesting ones are those of places or animals (including people) with some unusual or elusive feature. I go through the "New Pictures" display almost daily, but look at only a select few. This has just become the nature of the game. Just remember, the only one you have to please is you (or whomever is paying you). If you post something interesting, I promise to look at it. Possibly even admire it.

Today, for many various reasons, still images are the LEAST valued objects on the planet !

Anyone and everyone can and do produce quite acceptable images - so, in general it will take very exceptional content and execution for anyone to become even interested in ANY image ! People are continually bombarded by images and most are so wrapped up in their own little worlds that it is difficult to acknowledge any thing else. They are living in the moment and could care less about memories.

Do you mean that they could care less and that they do care somewhat or do you mean the Couldn't care less?

I have been taking many photos over the years. Most of them are in albums. When the family (4 sons and their wives and children come to visit, these albums come out, usually at the request of the grandchildren who love to see their fathers as little kids.
When one of the daughters-in-law asked what was going to happen to these albums "later on" and could she have this one then ("This one" contained many photos of our oldest son, her husband) war almost broke out in our livingroom: "What about the photos of my husband? You want those too?"
What they did not know is that I was already having 3 more sets of the photos printed, and put them into albums, in exactly the same order and with the same stories as the album they were looking at.
They will not get them until I have finished the duplicate albums, or when I die - whichever comes firsts.
If I don't get finished, my oldest son will finish the duplication for me.

For me, doing this "work" brings back many happy memories; For the grandchildren, as they look at the photos, I tell them the stories behind the photos and so they learn about their family. For the daughters-in-law, it has stopped the possibility of war over the photos.

I never display my work publicly and on occasion with family or a loved-one. I am only an amateur at best and rarely revisit them except once in a while. They are only important to me and that's about the sum of it.

If someone likes and wants a copy, I am floored and unprepared for that surprise. I have done several weddings but again, only to family at cost and never for profit.

It's just a hobby that I love and nothing else.

I have to ask: What is the capacity of the boat?

Or do I have to get my own boat?

I mainly take pictures for my own enjoyment, but I also like to take selected images (ones I think are my better images) and have picture books made, or framed prints, etc., and I give them out as Birthday or Christmas presents. I know that my relatives and friends enjoy the images I have shared with them in this manner. I know I'm no Ansel Adams, so the fact that people are not clamoring to see my images doesn't really bother me. Besides, there are so many billions of images out there on the net that it's not surprising that people are not as enthused as they might once have been.

No end to the number of people who want to get into the boat.

The possible capacity is infinite. All are welcome. Maybe we should start a club just for those in the boat. I'm sure someone could come up with a catchy name. Then we could start displaying our photographic efforts to other members and the public at large. No...wait...that defeats the purpose. Oh well...

I have to say I do belong to an excellent photography club and I am quite active in it although I rarely display any of my own work to the club or anyone else. I attend the meetings mostly to try to improve my own photography by observing what others do and how they do it, but that is just for myself, not my extensive fan club of one person.

Hi EvKar,

I know the feeling. I live in a 55+ community and am the official neighborhood photographer and videographer. When there is a community-sponsored event such as a dance, cookout, hike or charity drive, I will take photos and videos and assemble them into a brief (3-5 minute) slide show. I convert this to a YouTube video and post it on our community Facebook page. Typically I'll get over 100 views. If I'm lucky, 3 or 4 people will "like" the video. Only on rare occasions will more than 2 or3 people post a comment. Occasionally, someone I meet on my daily walk will say that they enjoyed the video. It bothered me at first that my efforts to document our events were not appreciated by a large percentage of my neighbors. Then I realized that I get a great deal of enjoyment in producing the videos and that's all the "payment" I actually need.
