Adorama contacted me via email about purchasing used equipment. I was willing to sell then a Hasselblad H3D II 39mp kit. I had purchased the body, prizim, and back from them a couple of years ago for $3495 . I had added a 80mm lens, Imagebank, extra batteries, AC power adapter and a zero halibuton case. i have shot less than 500 images with this camera since purchase. There offer was a $1000 for the whole enchilada. The lens alone is going for 800-1100 on ebay. I understand they have to make a profit but this is kind of excessive, other photogs at UH I'm sure have used them, are yall ok with taking this kind of beating and is this standard procedure from the used equipment buyers?

We all know these companies offer a fraction of the value of what we are selling to them. Then they sell the used gear to make a decent profit.
I cannot tell you how much your Hasselblad is worth it but like others here I suggest that you try to make a private sell advertising what you have. A good place for that is here.

It’s your choice whether or not to sell it to them. Maybe you should offer it on eBay or UHH!

I agree UHH is your best bet, because the gear you buy from this sight is well kept gear and you could trust these sellers.I never had a problem, stay away from EBay always problems!!!!

The additional information you provided in this post changes the picture a bit. All things being equal, I'm guessing you would have expected something closer to between $1500 to $1750 or even $2000. Have you looked at other dealers? There is B&H of course, KEH, and here in New Jersey we have our own smaller camera superstore called Unique Photo.

I sold two Canon cameras and lenses to them not too long ago and got almost $1500 for that gear. It was much more than I had expected for an 8-year-old Canon 7D Mark II and a 10-year-old Canon t3i.(with over 70,000 actuations each) and around eight lenses, with only one of them a Canon premium L lens. Most of the lenses had been well used and I got my value from them over the years. I was expecting an offer of less than $1,000 for all this well used gear which was still in very good condition. i was very pleased when they offered me more than $500 more than I had anticipated.

Of course, being in New Jersey I was able to bring everything with me to Unique and have it inspected in person, and they gave me a price and a check immediately.

B&H, Adorama, KEH and M P B photo are all ripoffs, they do not want to give you anything for your used gear, but BOY when they sell it they ROCK YOU, they don't even want to work with you.I would keep what I have or donate it before I gave it to them!!!

I have historically found that MPB and KEH offer way more for my used equipment than B&H, Adorama and Unique Photo with some minor exceptions here and there. Most quotes generated online at those two are usually spot on with the final offer. I, too, don't love the idea of shipping them but it is always insured and has worked out fine when I have done so.

Each year things go down in price.
They look at inventory, time to turn around and profit.
Most used items are bought by retailers at about 33% of what they can sell for to cover overhead and cost of money. Add current devaluing of the dollar that is why they made the offer.
Try eBay or other private sale to "Try" to get more right now.
Also on eBay look at sold prices not listing prices there can be a large difference.

Actually, I’m not okay with their offer. It seems that someone who will buy your equipment only to resell it will lowball the buying price to you only to make a HUGE profit when selling it to someone else.

You could wait it out so that someone will offer a better price or you could donate it to a school or museum. True. You won’t get cash but you will get a tax deductible certificate for the value it is truly worth.

You could list it on eBay or even here at UHH if you need cash.

The only advantage here is someone is selling YOUR gear and profiting by it. You are not aggravated by the constant haggling back and forth.

I would buy it sight unseen because it is a true gem of a camera. My wife has a different opinion. She stopped believing me when I said, “…just one more camera…..”

If I offended you with my suggestion, I offer my apology.

Two quick thoughts: First, It might be relevant what condition Adorama had listed the for the equipment when you bought it from them. If listed a couple years ago as “Bargain” or “Excellent+” might matter. Secondly, I agree with suggestions to ask for indicative offers from other reputable Used Camera dealers, and would add Roberts Camera/Used Photo Pro to that list.
Good luck. I think the economic uncertainty might be depressing customers’ enthusiasm at the moment for discretionary spending. So, cast a wide net.

You offer some valuable points to consider. I wish the owner GOOD LUCK when selling but a lot of resellers what a substantial profit. If they were to drop their profit margin, they might get more sales. Many resellers are under the impression that photographers are gearheads and have no idea what they have is worth.

Another thing to consider when looking at eBay sold prices is the fees the seller then pays to eBay. I find this is usually between 15% to 20%. I have not sold gear on eBay recently, so their fees may have changed (again!). The sold price is a good indicator of the value of your gear to someone who is purchasing for their own use, but the fees must be subtracted to compare to dealer’s purchasing price and…as pointed out previously…they also have other factors to consider.

MPB, that is the other used dealer Hoggers have mentioned. I've bought used from KEH.

All resellers buy wholesale (cheap) and sell retail or high book, or more, to make money.

As someone else said, get more offers to see what it is really worth.

If you want the higher dollar, sell it yourself on eBay, and bypass the middle guy.
