For nineteen years, I've been meeting twice a year, spring and Christmas, with guys I went to high school with. A friend who lives in DC organized a get-together there. I figure it would cost me at least $1,000 for those two days. The hotels cost around $300 per night, plus 14.5% tax. Surprisingly, I could take a train from here to DC for $54. Traveling at a better time would cost $104, still not bad. That's amazing.
Remember when Motel 6 actually cost $6.00 a night?
I'll wait till the Christmas gathering on Long Island, even though the wives will be there. I'll drive down, stay overnight with a friend, and drive home the next day.
I love driving.
It sounds like you are fond of it too Jerry.
Don't be a tight-wad, Jerry. You can't take with you, so go for it! Spend a grand!!
Cheers,
Don

Isn't there a line about putting the check into the coffin?

Most of the cameras I've bought cost less than that. If I can't justify the cost, I don't spend the money. I was in Stewart's buying two half gallons of ice cream on sale. As I was leaving, a father and daughter were also leaving. Each one had a double-scoop ice cream cone, and I bet they paid more than I did. I'd pay $3.39 for a half gallon, but I wouldn't pay $3.50 (or whatever) for two scoops.
Four hours on a train, $700 for a few hours' sleep, some conversation with friends I've been seeing on a regular basis for sixty years - no, I can't justify this.

OK, OK, I guess you are a tight-wad!!!
🤣🤣🤣
Once upon a time, being a cheapskate, the Better Half and I were on a road trip and we stayed at a "Lucky 7" for $20 cash only. It was an experience that I can't get out of my memory. My advice is, "There's a reason why cheap motels are cheap."

I was driving home from a visit in SC, and I was looking for a place to sleep. I've occasionally slept in my car at truck stops, but for some reason, I wasn't able to do that on this night. I finally found a motel with a vacancy. I had to check-in from outside, with the clerk behind a barred window. When I left the next morning, I looked at the place and thought, "I just spent the night there?" It looked like an abandoned building. The alternative was falling asleep behind the wheel. Some states (VA?) don't allow sleeping in the vehicle at truck stops. They must have a strong motel lobby. : )

You should never put a price on friendship.
Jerry, you said: "Remember when Motel 6 actually cost $6.00 a night? "
If you bring the ice cream, come on over anytime . . . .
We will leave the light on for you,

What if you knew this was going to be the last opportunity to see these friends? Either you or some of them will not be here next year. Would it be worth it then?
