Do any of you have the Canon S100? Ken R. calls it the best compact camera on earth. With a list price of $399, Amazon had it on sale yesterday for $199. It's up to $249 today.

New member here on digest and first time writing in. Sorry if I'm late in replying. I find the s 100 to be a great point and shoot. It shoots raw, tv, manual, hd movies etc. and does a good job. It fits in my pocket and is a great carry along when I am using my canon 7d. It's zoom is much less than some that I see but I only using optical zoom. Hope this helps.

I have one. It's a great little camera. I had the s95 that I loved until someone stole it. I replaced it with the s100.

It went from $199, to $229 yesterday, to $249 today. I bet they sold quite a few at $199. I was tempted, but I'm glad I resisted. I have an older Canon SD800 and a newer Sony WX9.

I had a Panasonic Lumix ZS5 and upgraded to a Canon S100. The Canon doesn't have as much zoom, but the image quality is much superior...especially when you set it like Ken R. says. I have an Op Tech quick release strap on it which is handy. In August I took some shots at my Grandson's outdoor wedding and they were better (in my opinion) than the amateur "photographer" gal that was hired. Since it was bright sun, I set the exposure compensation at -2/3 and it helped because I could only stop down so much. Whereas the "photographer" gal's outdoor shots were way over exposed! (She assured me that she could correct them on her computer.) I may go up to a DSLR sometime, but can't afford the lenses I would want, and most DSLRs are a big jump in size and weight, so for now I shall be content to carry the little S100.

Oh yes Jerry, I paid a great deal more than the prices you quoted. For an f2 Point and Shoot, those prices were a bargain..

I've used S90 and S95 cameras a lot. They are exceptional! My only negative comment would be concerning the ease of accidentally hitting a control of some sort. While I use Nikon as much as Canon in SLRs, Canon has it in the point n shoot field.

Actually, I'm glad that they are raising the price daily. Otherwise, I might be tempted. $199 for a $400 camera is an outstanding bargain - that I resisted. :D

I am an avid amateur photographer. I rarely write on UHH. however, I am very pleased with my S100, and I have some details as to why.
I have had the S100 for about 10 months. IMO it is a great pocketable indoor/low light camera. I am able to take indoor photos without flash far more often than with other point & shoot cameras I have owned. The aperture and shutter priority modes are also important to me. The S100 has the three elements essential for low light photography: the CMOS is 50% larger than most point & shoot cameras, the lens is fast at f2.0, and it has the fine Canon algorithm (digi 5) for converting to jpeg images. I call it an indoor camera only because it only has a 5x zoom. As the sensor gets larger for low light capability, the zoom goes down. 5x zoom for a sensor of this size is actually quite good.
I hesitate to agree that the S100 is the best in this category. The Sony RX100 has a slightly faster lens and a much larger sensor - 300% larger I believe. Some reviews I have read rate the Sony a bit higher than the Canon for low light image quality, but the Sony costs about $650. That makes the Canon S100 a bargain at anything under $300.
I should add that there is a new model of the Canon, the S110. As far as I can tell, Canon has not changed the image quality or hardware but simply added WiFi and some image editing. Canon dropped the GPS that few people wanted, and I think the new additions will likely be in the same category. The drop in the price of the S100 is partially due to the release of the S110, and IMO the S100 is preferable. The bottom line is that the S100 is a great, pocketable, low light camera currently at a great price.
