They’re called “accidents” which can happen to even the most careful people.

From time to time people report that they dropped their cameras, causing damage to the camera or lens. Don't they use neck or wrist straps? Failing to use neck or wrist straps seems to me to be like riding in a car without wearing a seatbelt. What am I missing here?

You're not missing anything! The camera strap has saved my bacon on several occasions. I even have a strap on my smartphone.

I use black PCV tape. Not only does it do a better job of hiding the name and model, it is easy to remove and doesn't damage the body in any way. The one giveaway is the crimson band on many of my lenses, a tell my Nikon lenses don't have, but there is that chevron on the bodies. Cute dog and a great smile.

Can't imagine why anyone would not want to have a shoulder strap on their camera. I've put my straps around my neck for more decades than I want to admit to, but consequently, I've never dropped a camera - and, what's more, no-one has ever attempted to steal it in a questionable location. Strangely enough, the only time I ever had a damaged lens was when the camera was attached to a tripod and it tipped over in the wind.

I’m not very keen on neck straps. In part, I don’t like advertising the camera manufacturer. I prefer a wrist strap that is attached to an ARCA plate for easy attachment and removal from a tripod.

I strongly believe that film and digital cameras will prove gravity exists by committing equipmentcuide so that you could have an excuse to go mirrorless.

I'm sure that whoever thought up those advertising neck straps got a huge bonus. I never use one.

Straps yes, but over the shoulder , across the body ,or wrapped around the wrist only . Never worn around the neck.

As a longtime photojournalist (48 years) wearing heavy camera/lens combos around the neck covering every subject around the world including war conflict has led to severe neck cervical damage and two major neck surgeries to keep from being paralyzed. I now have a permanent metal framework in my neck, really.

Just DO NOT wear cameras on straps around your neck. Dont think it can't cause you damage .

But to answer your question why folks drop cameras, sadly it has become in vogue and the cool fashion to shoot with the camera in hand with no strap. You see it everywhere and many top youtubers glorify it.

I personally paid too much of my own money to risk my expensive gear that way. Because you will drop it or have it knocked out of your hand eventually (like from running kids at a family gathering, or a crowd of folks trying to get that same shot at a family wedding) no matter what precautions you take, so best to have the safety net of a strap or wrist holder IMHO.

Cheers

Why do people get into accidents, car or otherwise?
Why do houses burn down?
Why do ship run aground?
Why do we have insurance?

A seat belt doesn't prevent accidents, just as the greatest camera strap won't prevent all mishaps. They can mitigate damage however, as with air bags.....

Usually it's because of a bonehead mistake by the photographer, like swinging a tripod with the camera mounted.

Or, sometimes because the shoot itself is risky - such as shooting near water, or maybe at the water level, or outside on the wing of a plane!

The only two times I dropped my gear is when the bad slipped off my shoulder...fortunately in a well padded case - no damage. Since then I've been more mindful of the camera bag/strap position. "Air bags" came to the rescue.

Please! One problem at a time! We're still working on the camera-dropping problem.

Besides my head, I also put an arm though the strap, carrying the camera like a sling bag except that the camera body is mostly to my side. I have the top of the camera towards my body so the weight doesn't bounce around. (The lens weight is then towards my body rather than pulling away from it.) Extremely comfortable. And using the strap this way it it needs to be adjusted longer and I can easily get the camera up to shooting position. By the way, I got this advice from Bryan Peterson.

Yes, I have heard about potential harm caused by putting the camera strap around the neck, but I still do it. My D750 isn't all that heavy, and the wide portion behind my neck spreads out the weight.

As for the one-hand-carry, yes, that is a thing, and it surprises me. Kai Wang used to be a regular camera reviewer for a site based in Hong Kong. He was very good and somewhat humorous, but he carried the cameras as they were a box of Crackerjacks.

Slipped on a wet rock. Camera was on a strap. Still dented the lens.
Guess not everyone is as graceful and careful as you.

One time due to an idiot pulling out in front of us, I rolled (actually end for end) my 1960 Studebaker, which didn’t have seatbelts. I bent the top of the steering wheel forward with my chest and busted the windshield with my head. No headache or scratches. The wife and kids got skinned u a little but nothing major was hurt other than my pride and joy (Stude).

We had just gotten the kids DQ Blizzards. Take my word for it, when you flip a car, it’s amazing the places ice cream is found the following day!
