If that's the only criteria then why are not all mirrorless photographers acclaimed geniuses? They should, as a group, be the greatest, most brilliant and successful photographers who ever lived, with not a bad one among them. Even I, who I consider to be a mere duffer alongside most of the members here, would be an internationally recognized photographer with my works on display around the world. Alas, that is not going to happen no matter what camera I use so I might as well trundle along with my outdated, outmoded and antique but trusty D500.
If that's the only criteria then why are not all m... (show quote)

Nobody should argue with Paul's comments. Take them as he intends them - and enjoy them!!!

Nothing in this world is perfect even a mirrorless.

99.99% of the time, I control the camera settings. Now, I may rely on a program to determine exposure/processing, which it does exquisitely well. However, I determine the settings I wish to use for exposure.

Taking control of the camera means that the resulting photo is on me. Good or bad, it’s on me. It’s much easier to let the camera control the outcome and when it’s a bad photo I can blame the camera and when it’s a good photo I can take credit for having a good camera. End of rant.

Precisely. I was in a seminar hosted by a Nat Geo photographer in Houston around '09. Greg somebody I think. First part was his experiences in shooting for N.G. Interesting enough.
He asked "how many people shoot on manual"; my and only a few other hands went up. He publicly excoriated us by saying when you drive a Ferrari, how can you expect to outperform what was designed??? Let the 'advanced' technology do the work..........

My partner in crime Judith (who has a better photographer's eye than mine) poked me and said "don't start anything"! Nice set up he had; Nikon tethered to some computer tethered to a screen so we could see the 'as shot' images.

During the afternoon session of shooting a model, he wasn't getting the results he wanted, so he went into (dreaded?) Manual mode, set EC and claimed you have to be flexible........
I know I know. If he had had a Canon..........! :)

Guy next to me lightly poked me from the other side and said so much for the Ferrari syndrome, or such like that.
Didn't go back for the second day.
Twice poked - once for control of anticipated verbal reaction, and once for being spot on..
Such is life. Just Shoot Me !! :}}

I don't care what mode you shooting you have control of the camera.

Success and/or failure is, like beauty, in the eye of the beholder.

I don't think the photographer can avoid taking credit or blame for the resulting image. Whether you shoot Auto, Manual, or anything in between, it is the person who pushes the button who is responsible.

Observers might say, "Wow! You must have an expensive camera." The photographer can't say, "Yeah, it's a lousy picture. My camera screwed up."
