I got my first pair of Vice Grips when I was about 13, and I still use them. In about 1970, I was putting new shocks on the rear of my car, and I used the Vice Grips to hold something. For several months after that, I wasn't able to find the Vice Grips. One day, I had to do some work under that car, and there were the Vice Grips, still attached to the shock absorber.

Project Farm tested vice grip-type pliers yesterday. You might know that Irwin now owns the Vice Grip brand. Among the test pliers was an original vintage pair that the guy bought online for $95. In all tests but one (I think), the old Vice Grips performed best. If you have old hand tools, keep them!

If you're not familiar with Project Farm, you should take a look. He one of the best YouTubers. He's consistent and very well organized.

Vise Grips are the best. I only have a small pair of the original style, but I did buy two sizes of the Irwin style.

Yes, Vice Grips are essential.

Many of the cheap foreign made ones are ok for clamping but that’s about all. The teeth round off the first time you use them. I use them when welding. If you splatter weld on them or accidentally weld them to your work, no big deal.

Good tools are hard to come by. In fact, most of the tools out there are garbage. I trust major name brands because the company will repair or replace their tools. But the Joe-Schmo brand are cheap and can be used to throw at people who try to steal my deWalts, Milwaukee’s, Makitas, Metubos, and Boschs.

When you watch Project Farm test name-brand tools, you'll see that neither the name nor the price mean very much.

Back when I still worked on my cars, two essentials were vise grips (large & small) and extendable magnetic pickup. Oh yes, since I’ve owned many British cars, duck tape and baling wire.

VICE GRIPS are the best things I learned about in my 8th grade shop class at Traverse City Junior High.

Irwin shut down the Vise Grip factory in DeWitt, NE around 2008. So no more Vise Grips made in the USA. No wonder they would buy the old one for $95.
I heard people keep saying outsourcing doesn't hurt quality as long as you have the QA. I do not think so. I wouldn't be surprised if the locking pliers made by a Chinese owned company would surpass the Vise Grip because they do not outsource.

It hurts quality, but it helps profits, and that's all that matters.

Because I kept borrowing my father's tools (and not returning them quick enough) he bought me a Sear's Craftsman set with something like 200 pieces. It had 3 sizes of vice grips and I've use each one for jobs ranging from loosening rusted nuts, to a soldering jig (the small one might have even been used as a roach clip...errrr, by my friends). This was back in the '70's when Craftsman tools were good and in spite of my years of abuse, they're still in great shape, today. Probably my most-used tool.
