In a hospital oncology practice where there are four or five nurses drawing blood, there is always going to be one nurse you pray will be on leave on your appointment day.

I've had many blood tests over the years. I can recall just one where I experienced a great deal of pain. She kept stickling me. It was not fun. All the others were with very minimal pain or without any pain.

My wife just completed 6 days in the hospital due to extremely low hemoglobin. She's on the mend now and feeling better. It may be several months before the body manufacturers sufficient hemoglobin to bring her level back to normal. While she was in the hospital, I visited her during the allowable hours, 10 AM - 8:00 PM. Each day when arriving, I'd ask her how the night was. She cracked me up when she referred to the nurses who took blood at 4:00 AM as the "vampire squad". I still laugh!

I have had countless blood tests over the years many times not even feeling it but the last two I've had taken from the same nurse have been rather painful. This second one hurt for hours afterward and the injection site is still puffy after five days. Has anyone experienced this? I will bring it to the attention of the oncologist when I see him in two days and I will request a different nurse take it the next time.

I, too, have had many blood tests over the years. Other than the initial insertion, I haven’t experienced pain after. I have experienced black and blue from small to very large areas, especially now with a blood thinner.
What it all boils down to is the person drawing the blood. The nurse who draws my blood at my oncologist’s office is terrific. Last week I didn’t even feel the needle going in and there was virtually no mark in the area.

BTW, if you want to get a rise out of a person who points a thermometer at your head (same person in my case) say, “Ow” when they pull the trigger.

Fortunately, I’m an easy draw (so I’m told). However, a nurse did have difficulty a few years ago. After two tries, she said something like, “I don’t understand….” She called another nurse over who had no issue.

I have had hundreds of blood draws over the years only a few really hurt. Why? One thing that my med group does is to use a needle that has an adapter so vials can be exchanged after one is filled. I have had as many as 4 vials filled for multiple blood tests with only one poke. I assumed this was standard practice.
I recently had a tooth filled. The pain killer shot which usually stings quite a bit was almost painless. I asked the doc why and she said if you inject it slowly there is very little pain. She was young and probably not long out of school. Maybe they now school caregivers in this technique. What took so long??

Some people have the touch but many don’t. In my experience, many nurses don’t have the touch. The phlebotomist currently in my doctor’s office is painless and makes it look effortless.

Some of the ones I have dealt with I don't think they could even spell Phlebotomist!

Amen to that.
Been there, done that. Always the same one who misses and/or leaves a good bruise.

And then there's the nurse who sticks you in the crotch of the elbow of your dominant arm and you basically cannot use that hand during infusion for an hour. Or two. Or three. No reading a book, working a tablet screen, or just writing in a journal. I stopped *that* after the second time!

Gotta give a hell of a lot of credit to the good ones!!!
I find it amazing how they can perform the draw with little or no discomfort and hit their target!

Especially the EMT techs who can hit the vein in a moving truck! No discomfort, success on first try.

I've donated many gallons of blood over the years, most donations were OK, slight discomfort nothing more. But, when I was living in Ohio, the phlebotomist at the blood center there was really bad. When she stuck the needle in my vein, it felt like it had barbs on it and it hurt all the way till the end of the donation. After the third time being stuck by her, I asked for a different nurse. That donation was wonderful in comparison. One of my co-workers ended up being stuck by nurse I refused. After it was over, on the way back to the office, by co-worker said "Steve you were right, she was horrible!"

Hope your wife mends fast. I had to have four vials taken. That was a first for me.

The bevel on the needle should be facing up and it makes insertion easier and less painful.

Maybe I'll inject it myself.😆
