There is no place more aptly named than Deception Pass in WA state. You Tube has some very interesting videos posted of kayakers negotiating the "pass". Images were taken with a cell phone camera.

Early explorers learned quickly how treacherous this passage can be with very tricky tides to deal with.

The bridge takes you onto Whitbey Island, one of the longest islands in the USA. Beautiful views all around.

I've gone through Deception Pass several times in my boat. You need to watch the tidal flow carefully. I've seen whirlpools there that were 10-15 feet deep. If you ever get caught in one of those, the chances of getting out aren't good.

The name was given by Captain George Vancouver who was exploring the region to find a passage that could link the Pacific Ocean with the Atlantic. After sailing nearly 50 miles down the east side of Whidbey Island, he realized he had been deceived.
