Most probably the 16-35 is the lens that you are looking for. I have not used one but I am pretty familiar with the lens and its results. It is a very nice, sharp lens.
I have an old 12-24 f4 AF-S DX lens that I use with my D610 from 16 to 24 mm without vignettes. Very sharp lens with excellent quality images.

What do you all recommend for a landscape lens for a Nikon D850 with lowest distortion? I am thinking a zoom in the range of 18-35 or thereabouts. And yes, price is a factor.

Lowest distortion will never be in a ZOOM ! - Laowa just came out with a 20mm f4 zero-d - https://www.ebay.com/itm/374123139912?hash=item571b7a1348:g:6p0AAOSwPwpiowRN

Sorry, I absolutely would not recommend 18-35 zoom for the D850, that will change his pictures from FF to DX format. I can agree with the 24-120G as being a really good lens for him and would also suggest a used 50mm f1.8 as a second lens that he can use as is or for panorama shots. I really enjoy using the 50 for vertical panorama shots, it is small, light and very sharp. Good luck.
P.S. The 24-70G does not have VR and is often attributed to motion blur, and the E version is very heavy on the D850.

I agree with a previous stated 14-24 f2.8 nikkor it is a amazing lens This image was shot this past weekend in St. Marks Florida behind the Lighthouse it is a stitched 3 panel Panorama cropped in height . Shot @14mm F13 . second Image @Dallus Creek Florida same lens @ 14mm . First image auto correction for distortion in ACR before stitching .I hope this helps with your decision .This lens can be found used under a thousand dollars I bought it for $1400.00 refurbished from Nikonusa .

Unless you need it for night photography (for a brighter viewfinder), you can save size, weight and money by NOT getting an f/2.8 lens. In fact, sometimes f/4 lenses are sharper and better corrected too.

An f/4 lens is more than sufficient for much wide angle photography. In fact, for landscape photography you'll more likely than not be stopping the lens down anyway.

Another thing to watch for is lens design... If you plan to use filters, some wide angle lenses have a convex front element that won't allow standard, screw-in filters. There are special filter holders and oversize filters for use on some of those lenses, but the holders and filters are rather costly and bulky.

It's great for Nikon's bottom line to buy a f2.8 lens, but I don't think you really need this for landscape. I happen to like the Nikon AF-S FX NIKKOR 18-35mm f/3.5-4.5G. It is less expensive than the f2.8 or f4 lenses, and also lighter and easier to carry. Unless you are going to be shooting in low light conditions, this lens will give you great results.

I shoot with a Tamron 15-30mm f/2.8 on my D810. It is a fantastic lens, but you will need a special adapter if you want to use filters... it needs 150x150mm filters. I can recommend some good filters if you go that direction.

I use the Nikon 18-140 almost exclusively. It is sharp as a tack and has a great telephoto range. And, it is not expensive. I bought mine used.

I have had the 24-70 f 2.8 non VR since 2016. 75% of my photos are with this lens. I have the 16-35 f/4 and I can use all kinds of Lee filters in it and other screw in filters which you can’t do with the 17-36. I also just got the 20 mm f/1.8 for its light weight and for Astro.

I think he was just giving a general range, not recommending that lens. And actually that lens, which Nikon no longer makes, was actually a FF lens. As far as I know it’s the only Nikon 18-XXX lens that wasn’t a DX.

Now this IS a DX lens and a very poor choice for a D850.

Getting back to OP's premise, the 16-35 is quite versatile, but at the wide end has very high distortions.

Now, why is it that a landscape shooter is so darn interested in minimizing distortion?? Usually it is the architecture guys who are looking at that aspect of lens performance.

For budgetary and weight considerations take a look at the 2nd version, (G), of the 18-35 3.5-4.5. It comes in under a pound and has no troubles taking standard 77mm filters. There is some distortion at the wide end, but less than the 16-35. This 18-35 is FX (full frame) and can be found attractively priced on the used market.
