I store my batteries outside of what ever unit in plastic medication bottles.

Be sure your washers are not so thick as to jam the battery door. I think you might be better off with paper or adhesive paper, tape, or similar on your battery terminals while storing them in your device.

Paper strips are a good idea but any adhesive might leave a residue on the battery or contact that could cause a bad connection.

Would storing them in separate zip-lock snack sized baggies work?

If you put in both batteries the wrong way and apply a negative voltage, your device may be damaged. The designers may not added a protection circuit (i.e. a diode) because it's battery powered and they need all the voltage they can get.

If a device causes a short, that can damage the batteries. Otherwise it's more likely that the batteries will damage(destroy) any IC that gets a voltage outside their maximum ratings.

I too have a PEN-F, in the bag with lenses, gadgets, etc. AND the remote. Haven't yet had the battery problem, but now I know what to do. Thanks for raising the topic. How do you like the PEN-F??

I say put one in right and one in backwards and let them fight it out! 😜🤪

Most actually are protected - But you might just find the one which isn't

That works - if the batteries are in series - real bad if they are in parallel
