My windows 10 machine is on it's way out. I purchased a new Dell inspiration 16 plus from Costco. I did not do the usual research mut I have shipped hundreds of Dell Servers and laptops as part of recording systems for use in Seismic acquisition.

I am very disappointed with Dell.

1. No disk access light. Cannot tell what's going on.
2. Poor cooling design.
3. No real power switch. Have to drag a shade down with the touch pad to power the darn thing down. Can not even remove the battery.
4. Flakey touch panel. Builds up static charge and quits working. Others on line identified the problem as missing ground. This after Dell failed to fix the darn things. Finally dell made changes. Of course I am on the road on an RV trip while these is happening.

Contacted Dell and took weeks for the part to ship. I got notice I had only five days to use the part or I would have to get in line again. I had to cut my trip short and drove 100 miles to make it back to the farm to meet up with the tech to install the new part.

The part seems to work so far. Still working to transfer photos an. Adobe.

Just got into the puddle myself. The lastest auto update bricked my best laptop (which was more than 8 years old ) and the factory reset brought it back to window 8. Lost some files and kicked a few bins but accepted the result just the same. My 3 year old laptop did update well but became a crawler. The trusty tower which i got way back in 2007 is running on its last lifecycle, having gone to 3 repairs.

I had no choice but to bite the times. Got myself a Dell G15 running on Windows 11 just a few days back. I'm now set for another 8-10 years hopefully.

Congrats on the new machine - I don’t think it’s at all unreasonable to get 10+ years out of a good machine. I haven’t put fully explored 11 yet, but any windows (7,10 or 11) is an improvement over Windows 8, which is right up there with Vista as the worst releases in the last 20+ years.

7 is a great OS, just needs some additional anti virus/malware protection now. I will say that for me, 10 was faster with the same HW.

Thanks! I sure hope this one runs smooth and long. So far, 11 has some sense of familiarity, although settings are scattered everywhere and I have not seen some of them.

So true about Vista and 8, both of which is a real bummer of an OS. XP was much better than the two, specially with the compatibility with older software and games like Red Alert 2
I'm trying to update the older laptop running on Windows 8 to 10 again, so far no luck. If it does, ill shut down the updates so it will not go up to 11 and once more.

I had no problems with XP either.
But I had a few applications that worked in XP did not in 7.

I still have one machine running XP SP3 to run an Ap for audio testing, but it’s not connected to the internet or my network - still rock solid.

So just finished checking all my usual SW (Capture One, Topaz, Office, utilities) and all the peripherals (scanner, 2 printers, card reader, displays, audio, network) work fine as well. Seamless and if you move the taskbar to the left, hard to tell the difference between 10 and 11.

[quote=niteman3d]That's the business model of the day, Adobe being the prime example. Use Bing, Gmail, and Firefox like I do and see if you constantly get nagged about Edge and Google search. Extension permissions? If you want them to work, tell them everything. My current desktop is almost five years old, but I spent a couple of extra bucks on what I thought was a little future-proofing by getting Windows Pro, a high-end video card, max RAM, etc. I thought it should be good to go for ten years or more. Au contraire. It's not Windows 11 capable!

Same here except win 10 pro. MS touted win 10 was the final with only upgrades. It is partly a money making game but also a security thing, IMHO.

While 11 may require new HW (although there are work-around s for the TPM requirement), it’s a no cost upgrade from 10, just as 10 was a no cost upgrade for 7. There will likely never be any SW that isn’t constantly improved or updated. If there is, it will eventually become obsolete for one reason or another. HW is completely improving in performance, and by its nature, SW will evolve to take advantage of the more powerful HW.

Yup, look how they've improved from DOS and all the neat toys one can utilize now.

Sad about what they did to Windows 8. Under the hood it was an improvement over Windows 7, faster and more secure. The bizarre GUI killed it. It came out when everyone in the world was buying tablets. MS thought the only way to compete and keep the PC alive was to make an OS with a tablet-like interface. People who were actually intelligent pointed out that tablets are primarily useful for entertainment and perhaps social media, but not productivity. Many organizations that would have normally upgraded their machines with the release of a new OS skipped 8.

Vista might run well on a modern machine, but it was too bloated for the hardware available when it was released, and thus it ran like a snail.

MS management is beyond corrupt and 11 and 10 are both scams to control end users thru endless buggy forced updates. Sooo many people on this forum and elsewhere are always complaining about updates wreaking havoc on apps that worked just fine untill the next forced MS Win 10/11 update occured unannounced by MS.
Absurd. People who escape this wrath are in a zone of HW and SW that, for the time being, avoids the nefarious MS code that destroys other paying customers PCs, and renders them helpless (30 day max) in stopping this corporate madness of "forced updates", which never existed prior to Win 10. Choosing your own update preference dates back to more than 3 decades. Then MS forced it down users PCs "OS throats" with 10/11 fascist style programming.
Hogwash! Win 8 was a dog too, though you could still turn auto UD off. MS is a monopoly and in bed with the US DOJ and SEC, which are also highly corrupted. MS wants more control and more money, not end user satisfaction and choice, to keep their stock up. Screw that.
Long live Win 7. Auto update set to NEVER .
My PCs and numerous apps have been running smooth and fast for the past 8+ years on Win 7. Newer isn't better. Software companies are notorious liars.
