Yikes! These photos make living in an area devoid of poisonous snakes all the more appealing.

Yes, walking through the woods in Fall with no snake worries would be nice. Copperheads are not easy to see in the brown leaves.

I agree with previous comments. My experience with Cottonmouths is that they are a pissed off, bad ass, snake with an attitude.

This first picture of the boat dock was taken recently with my phone's camera and is a big part of this story. On February 3, 2020 we had an unusually warm 70+ degree day so on a day like that who doesn't want to get out? I went to our state conservation area hoping to get some bird shots, especially an eagle and I had photographed an eagle before on one of those trees in the lake. So getting out of my car and walking to the end of that dock I was looking up never looking down to where I was stepping. There was nothing to photograph so after a minute or two decided to go back to the car. While walking back I was looking down and spotted this large cottonmouth that evidently I had walked past. At another time I nearly stepped on one in some weeds about 4 inches tall. After those experiences I never put my foot down on the ground without first looking when I'm in that area

Great story, Jerry and good shots of a potentially bad dude. Snakes of this coloration blend in so well with their background. Having accidentally stepped on several non-venomous species growing up, I learned very early to watch where you step in the woods. That habit has saved me numerous times.

I've heard a lot of people say that but so far my encounters with them end up with them crawling away from me.

Respectfully, this is not a cottonmouth or a venomous snake at all - notice the eye is round where a cottonmouth (or any venomous snake) has slit eyes. Great pictures, though.

I never knew a Cottonmouth that didn't understand the swing of a garden hoe or the sound of a 12 gauge.

I can't see the pupils and opening the mouth wide as a warning sign is normal behavior of the cottonmouth. What other kind of snake in the USA do you know that exhibits this behavior?

When I was younger I killed every snake I saw but not any more.

I just ran this through google lens and it was ID'd as a cottonmouth.

If y'all have a shortage of these bad boys, I could ship you a few along with a few copperheads and the occasional rattlesnake. Could also send a few alligators too.

This reptile crawled out to get some warm air or some prey (fish). You've got very nice shots from your quick reflex!
One time we were hunting quails in Quanah ,Texas . It was a warm day in November, while looking for birds on a hill we stepped back from a rattle snake nest. Our dog jumped in , barked vigorously and got bit twice in his rear legs. We shot and killed 5 of those snakes and saved the dog. We brought him to the vet to get several shots. It took him a week to recover . The snakes were out of their nest to get some warm sun rays in the afternoon.
