Windows Does Not Recognize New CFexpress Card Reader

I have a Canon R5. I bought and used a 128 GB CFexpress Type B card. I also bought a Hoodman CFexpress card reader. But connecting it to my 1-1/2 old AMD RYZEN 5 desktop, Windows 11 does not recognize it. However, it is recognizable by my newer MSI GS76 Stealth laptop.

My RYZEN has 3.0 USB ports. The Hoodman says it is to be used with USB 3.1 interfaces. I would think that it would be downward compatible, but I guess I am wrong.

My question is how to get the memory readable by me RYZEN computer, a different card reader, adding USB 3.1 ports to my RYZEN, or what?

Thanks in advance.

Does your computer have any USB 3.1 outlets at the rear? If it has you could run a cable from it to the card reader.

If your PC has 3.0 USB and your reader is 3.1 it will not work. Backwards compatible is true but not forwards compatible. Which is what you state.

That being the case - USB 3.1 reader is not backward compatible to my PC's USB 3.0 - is there another reader that is compatible that is also compatible with my memory card?

Yes there are 3.0 card readers. It should be less expensive than the latest greatest

But do they have a slot for a CFexpress card? That is the issue?

Maybe this would work. I had to go through a couple of pages on Amazon to find one that is compatible with USB 3.0. There may be others.

Have you rebooted the PC and then tried again? I just added a card reader to a new Windows 11 PC and it didn't recognize it. After reboot and trying again, it did recognize it.

If the cable is included use that. I had to buy a cable as my machine only had usb2. With the cable you can read both cards and don't need card reader. Maybe a bit slower, but found moving the card(s) a PITA.

Sounds like a driver issue for the card reader. Ports are downward compatible. Maybe check the card reader website for a driver download.

I’m assuming you went into the Device Manager and deleted the associated driver and then on restart, let the computer re-find it, then try the reader again?

Thank you all for your comments and ideas. I had not tried most of them. I do have a cable and have used it for small number of photos. I typically shoot a couple of hundred photos on during a softball tournament, the slow speed would be a killer, I think.

Other ideas I had not tried yet and may need to.

A special thanks goes to therwol for spending time to go deeper into Amazon - something I should have done.

I don’t think so - if the cable and driver are correct, the only issue is that the 3.1 device will operate at 5Gb/sec instead of 10. I’m guessing this is a cabling or driver issue.

Btw, lots of confusion between USB 3, which is now correctly called USB 3.1 Gen 1 (5Gb/secand) USB 3.1, Gen 2 (10Gb). There are a variety of connectors and that can be a compatibility issue but everything is backwards compatible.

I would enter Ryzen desktop serial number or exact model number at Ryzen website to determine exactly what type USB ports are on your desktop. Since it is only 1.5 years old, my guess is that they are USB3.1 ports. I bought my laptop in 2019 and it has USB 3.1 ports.

If your desktop lacks ls USB 3.1 ports, you may be able to buy a card if you have a slot free for a Input output card with USB 3.1 and other needed ports.

The card reader I use for my Cf cards is a Sony card reader. It comes with two cables: USB-c to USB-C and USB-b to USB A. I use it to download images to my 2019 laptop with win 10 pro.

Are you shooting in RAW? I do not think that Windows has a codec that will read the new Canon R5 raw files? Try using the Canon utility software for your camera and see if that resolves the problem. Otherwise, Windows should read all jpg files.
