need a new SSD backup

I am using the 4TB version of the new small SanDisk SSD as my primary external for all of my work. The size is amazing. They do run hot. B&H had a fantastic sale on them recently. You might want to see if the price comes down on Prime Day. It has lightened my load when I travel due to the small size. So far, so good. Good luck!

It does NOT! Best of luck.

Backup drives can be larger, but should not be smaller, than the internal SSD or conventional drive you wish to back up.

Time Machine will automatically delete older backups as needed to keep the backup current, but it is always nice to have "breathing room" on a drive (especially a conventional drive), so the system can move files around for efficiency.

I use a conventional spinning platter Time Machine backup drive twice the size or more than my internal SSD. Right now it's four times larger.

Samsung T7s are good, relatively cheap, and reliable…but they're USB only. If you want a Thunderbolt drive I recommend one of the ones from OWC at macsales.com. In reality though…I have both on my Studio and checking the R/W speeds the TB is faster but not really a whole lot…and the TB drives are considerably more $$.

Whether a Thunderbolt 3 or 4 drive will really help the workflow depends on the task. Until you really start moving huge amounts of data around, typically for video editing projects and high volume still image rendering, a USB 3.2 drive is plenty fast enough. Now, if you're working in ProRes Raw or with 5.7K or 8K video, you already know you need TB 3 or 4. I'm adding a Lumix GH6 this year, so I may need a fast Thunderbolt drive in the future.

The chief advantage of Thunderbolt 3 or 4 besides speed is the ability to carry lots of different data paths at the same time. A Thunderbolt hub with USB A, USB-C, Ethernet, SDXC II, Micro SD, Analog audio line in/out, pass-through Thunderbolt, and HDMI is a great thing to have on the desk, especially if your main machine is a laptop. OWC makes some of the best docks and hubs around.

Since I am a graphic designer with lots of large files open and working at the same time I really noticed the improvement switching to external SSD, which is where I save my work. When the prices come down more I would love one larger than 4TB. I travel a lot so NAS and other storage systems don’t work for me. It needs to fit in my backpack.

I need a new SSD backup for my Mac Studio max. My old WD my passport couldn't stand the stress I guess.

Any suggestions? I'm not shooting with a Canon R5.

I’m not quite sure how what camera you’re NOT shooting with is relevant.

Your system is only as fast as its slowest part, which could just be a cheap cable! Best of luck.

Amen to that. Thunderbolt 4 cables are universal. They’ll carry USB-C, 3, 2, 1, HDMI, Ethernet, audio, and almost anything else.

Not sure what you mean by backup. If you need a drive to hold copies or originals of your images, I also suggest a 2TB SSD, preferably the n.M version, and also buy an external hard drive case for it that has a connector cable compatible with your computer, either USB-C or USB 3, etc. I got my SSD and case at NewEgg. The SSD is very easy to install in the case. Do not be worried about that.

My backup drive is much larger than my computer storage. I have a couple of 1 TB SSD drives on my computer but my backup drive is a 6 TB. I typically keep 4 full backups and maybe a dozen incremental. I can go back 13 weeks and find a file. I use Macrium Reflect backup software. And I have plenty of room for other files.

For the PC enthusiasts responding to the original poster, just know that the M1 Max-powered Mac Studio is *not internally upgradeable.* For external expansion connectivity it has:

On the back panel, four Thunderbolt 4 ports (USB-C jacks), each with signal support for:
> Thunderbolt 4 (up to 40Gb/s)
> DisplayPort
> USB 4 (up to 40Gb/s)
> USB 3.1 Gen 2 (up to 10Gb/s)

PLUS

Two USB-A ports (up to 5Gb/s)
An HDMI port
A 10Gb Ethernet jack
A 3.5 mm headphone jack

On the front panel:

Two USB-C ports (up to 10Gb/s) (NON-Thunderbolt)
One SDXC card slot (UHS-II)

It should shock you with the speed boost over your iMacs.

One thing of note... ALL the M1 series Macs have essentially the same single-core performance when equipped with the same amount of memory and empty storage. The Max and Ultra versions, though, have extra dedicated video processors and more processor cores, graphics processor cores, and neural engine cores for better multi-core and graphics performance.

The Mac Studio Ultra should accelerate your image rendering workflow dramatically, especially when working with large quantities of very large files.

I have been amazed at the performance of the M1 MacBook Air, compared to my old iMac. As long as the system has sufficient drive space for virtual memory swapping operations, it is very fast.

You said the magic words for me in "accelerate your image rendering workflow" as that is the main reason I bought in to replace my iMac PRO. With the new features available on the Z9 for sports, I find myself bringing 4k+ images home for a baseball game, so rendering speed is very important to me. I purchased the $ 3999.00 model which I think should suffice as I don't do video and don't really plan to. I store nothing but OS and apps on the internal drive, leaving most of it free. I store my Lr catalog on a OWC SSD and my more current photos on a separate OWC 8TB device, using other attached spinners for less important stuff and Synology NAS for backup and everything else. PM me if you'd like to chat.
