When raw was new it seemed everyone said to shoot raw and jpeg, which I did. I was looking over my storage yesterday and was reminded just how much space this is taking up! I use subscription Lightroom and Photoshop, if that matters to your response. I do not recall ever going back to the jpeg shots for any reason. Is there some reason I should NOT just go and delete them? It would be easy enough to do. In January I went to a SONY mirrorless and these files are even larger than before, so I am storage conscious right now. My gut instinct is to just delete the jpegs but I don’t want to cause any problems. I’d love to hear your thoughts on this.

Also…for the record, how many others are shooting raw and jpeg, or did I miss the memo saying this was not really necessary. (The camera “how-to experts” seem to suggest setting it up this way.).

I shoot both and use the jpeg to review the photos and then chose a few RAW images to work on. The jpegs are temporary to me.

Raw isn't just a file format, it's a way of life. RAW is one of the true wonders of modern digital photography. Many times while editing my RAW files, I begin to see my connection to the fabric of the universe.

I would recommend deleting the jpeg photos since, as mentioned by others, you have the raw photos that I presume you kept because they were your keepers so you can always create a jpeg. If you inputted the jpeg files using LR then I believe you need to do the deleting there because of the way LR keeps track of everything. I could be wrong.

I’m not sure what you mean. And not just because of your bad grammar and usage.

It just never ends at UHH, bet on it, at least a couple of times a week, topics like "RAW vs JPEG", "DSLR vs mirrorless", "To post process or NOT to post process"...ad nauseam...all reasons UHH has lost its appeal and relevance for me.

Interesting. I seem to remember you posting more than about going mirrorless or not. I guess it was relevant then.

Today, storage is cheap. A WD Red Pro (CMR) 4TB is less than $100 on sale, which happens frequently. I use WinCatalog to keep track of what's on my MANY HDD's (online and offline). Computers have many functions and can be used for many things, not just photos. FOR ME, it's cheaper to archive a drive and add a new one than spend my time cleaning up.

I shoot RAW and JPEG; the RAW for me, the JPEG for my travel companion. After being out all day hiking/sightseeing, I don't have the energy for any PP. Simple to TeraCopy the day's photos to several HDD'S, then copy the JPEGs to micro SD's that she can take back home. Using Irfanview, it's easy to quickly delete the daft ones. I have RAWs for PP; she has JPEGs that she can connect to mobile or computer to show her friends.

If you don't shoot RAW, you're not a photographer.

Then what are you?

The real answer is: It depends . . .

On what you are doing. I am a real estate photographer shooting ground stills, aerial stills, 360's and more for a half dozen agencies. It depends on what the agency specifies. In my case some agencies specify JPEGs and others specify RAW. And so, by always shooting RAW+JPEG I never have to worry about changing my settings and having them wrong for a particular shoot. I always have what the customer agency wants.

Yes it certainly does take up extra space, but I haven't run out yet, and if/when I do it is simple to go back and delete anything that the client did not specify for the job.

Best Regards,

BT

And when the day comes, and it will, that things like focus and DOF can be manipulated in some future evolution of RAW, THAT will be a good day. Just think of all the possible camera defaults available in JPEG XXI....

We re-issue the memo most every month under the heading: STOP - you're wasting your time shooting RAW & JPEG, just shoot RAW.

You can use LR to filter by file type and identify the JPEGs. ---.

What he said about deleting within Lightroom or whatever PP software you're using to be sure the catalog remains valid or the catalog will contain pointers to files that are no longer there.

For years my Windows PC did not have the codecs to display my Fujifilm and both types of Nikon raw files in Explorer, so I got in the habit of using JPGs as a quick visual reference. I've also been so used to working with folders in DOS, Windows, Linux, etc. I never thought of organizing photos with specialized software as just an occasional hobbyist. With much faster disk drives and more codecs, it makes sense not to save JPGs from the camera's card unless I plan on doing a lot of e-mailing. ("Daddy, why do they call them disk drives? Why do you call saving a TV show taping it?") I am not sure how the codecs were installed, whether it was from PP apps or they now come with Windows like so many drivers seem to.
