Sorry for your loss. I will definitely pass your story onto my children who have a dog in the family.

Thank you. The main reason for the post, being, to hopefully prevent dogs and their owners going through such a traumatic and sad experience.

We have had Collies for about 40 years. Always having had puppies, all of which lived for at least a decade.

However we lost our beloved Border Collie, Miskin, (aged 12) in May last year, and In December we visited a rescue centre and adopted a beautiful 3 year old Border collie. She had ended up in the centre after her young owner had sadly died. Quite shy at first, she soon settled in and became a favourite with everyone. At the beginning of May whilst out for a walk she picked up a stick and brought it back to my wife, who threw it for her, something neither I nor my wife would very rarely do, as normally we would have a ball to throw. She chased and caught the stick but part of it broke and lodged in her throat. We rushed her to our local vets, who kept her over night. The following day they suggested we should take her to a specialist animal hospital in Bristol (70 miles from us), they operated on her but tragically she died two days later. We were absolutely devastated. The sadness suffered at the loss of all our dogs has been dreadful but because she was so young, we only had her for 4 months and the terrible way it happened has been unbearable.

The animal hospital vets told us this is a common occurrence and a lot of dogs don’t survive. I know there are a lot of dog owners on this site so I write this hopefully to discourage anyone else from throwing a stick for their dog and going through the sadness we have suffered, and are still suffering.

I am so sorry for your loss, I know how losing a four footed family member can hurt. I wish I could say that you will get over it soon, but I can't. I lost Smudgey (Border Collie) over a year ago and I miss him so every day. I have adopted a rescue Border Collie/Queens Heeler mix.Completly different personality. I try not to compare the two as Howard (the new one) hasn't had more than 15 years to get used to my ways like Smudgey did, but he is doing really well and progressing every day. Howard is not a replacement, but an addition, Smudgey cannot be replaced. Your story is tragic for sure and thanks for sharing it.

Sorry for your loss. Please replace the dog after an appropriate period. Dogs play such an important role in our lives and being a good owner is a win/win for both of you. I've had dogs all my life (a long time) and it was always painful when they pass on. But the most painful of all was my Border Collie Belle. She had all the instinctive Border Collie traits and loved to herd. But her greatest love was retrieving a frisbee at which she was excelled with magnificent leaps in the air.

If you have a dog that likes to retrieve. use a frisbee or a tennis ball. I even made carboard frisbees to play with indoors.

The hardest thing I ever had to deal with is when I was forced to sell my home due to deaths in the family and out of work. My hardest thing was that I had two Poodles Bud and Petie/Pete who we had since they were puppies. I still remember taking them to the Humane Society to put them up for adoption. Before i left they both wrapped their lashes around my legs and gave me the impression that they want to go back home with me, and then tears were rolling done my face as i was leaving. Before I left after the house was sold and bills paid off made my last visit to see them. Petie was still very protective for this brother Bud and Bud just looked at me so sad I could see tears coming down from his eyes. A friend of mine stopped by and was told that they were purchased together. I was glad that they both were together and not separated. Both the boys were 12 years old and to this day the hurt is still in my heart for them. It has been over 10 years since they left me and I just wish I had a place to live and if I would have had a place, they would have went their with me but unfortunately did not until somebody gave them a new place to live. Hopefully when I die, I will see them when I cross over!

That’s too bad. Dogs are special, and become members of the family. It was a tragic accident, and I’m sorry it happened to you.

So sorry for your loss. I wish I didn't know how much it hurts. Thank you for sharing the story and attempt to keep the same situation from catching someone else unawares. The pets we lose seem to leave super big holes in our hearts. A funeral director who handles cremations once told me that he's actually had women who failed to return to claim the ashes of their husbands but never anyone who didn't return for those of their pets.

I am so sorry. Our pets are our babies. I too will pass this on to others. I never dreamed of something like that happening. My heart hurts for you both.
