Good to know! Thanks!

The absolute ONLY response to any of these obvious scams is NONE!!! Do not even allow them to determine that you exist by offering any kind of response!!!

The use of "dear" is a giveaway too

Yea. No one uses that salutation in a letter anymore.

I’m in the process of selling something and am using PayPal. I got an offer to purchase and sent a money request. I was asked when I would mail it out. I asked where it was mailing to and was told New York. I said as soon as the money is in my PayPal,account but not before Tuesday because there a holiday on Monday. Response was “what holiday? How do you call it?” Then yesterday I got an email from the person on a PayPal letterhead telling me the money is in my account. Of course it wasn’t. I can’t print my response here. Made me wonder if people actually fall for this kind of scam.

Sadly, many do. That's why they keep doing it.

Yes, "dear" and "kindly" aren't American business terms.

Notice the date of the order. The "kindly verify" is a giveaway. Businesses don't talk like that.

Yeah, I got three of those. In checking my PayPal account on the first one there was an actual $400 invoice pending in my account. I denied the charge immediately. The other two never appeared in my account.

When did "Dear" as a salutation go away for business letters?

Yea, I received a bunch of them for a while. Bit Coin, Crypto, ...
I've even "bought" computers for people in other states.

Unless you look at the actual email header info, the email in the "From:" is 99.999% spoofed.
They're just using the PayPal image(s), which can be easily copied.
(And why would it come from a gmail account and not a PayPal account.)

I mark them as spam and delete them.
They probably want you to call the number so they can "credit" your account.
Of course you'll have to give then the appropriate account number(s) to get the "credit"...

And guess what else, I don't have a PayPal account.

“Forward” is the quickest way I know to see the sender’s actual address. And then the email is set up to actually forward to the people who handle spoof at the company or agency (if the company or agency provides that service).

I get them too. They tell me that my PayPal account has been charged X amount of dollars.
I laugh because I don't have a PayPal account.
I send it along to PayPal and let them deaL with it.

Even forward will display the spoofed email address. Looking at the header information shows the actual IP address where the email originated (last in the list, the originating server itself. Almost always not the domain listed in "From:".), regardless of the "email" displayed. The header information is required to do any accurate evaluation.

I recently received the exact same email and chose to report it to PayPal who confirmed it was a scam. PayPal encourages everyone who receives a questionable email purportedly from them to forward it to Spoof@PayPal.com.

If it’s especially egregious (I get about 5 a day) I forward it to “abuse@the ISP/email provider in the hope that they might shut down the account.

Forward the original email to:

spoof@paypal.com

Don't know how much it will actually help.

Good luck
