MANY years ago I had my one and only encounter with one of these animals. Late at night I ran over one while riding my motorcycle. Once stopped, I was able to see several quill sticking from the front tire. A helpful motorist has also stopped and found the wounded critter in the drainage ditch. It was not badly injured but was really pissed off. The question centered on whether or not the quill had penetrated the inner tube. The wheel was NOT going to roll with the quill in place so we removed them. Luckily, the tire held pressure and I was able to get home. While living here the last 15 years I have never seen another porcupine, and am quite thankful for that fact. Nice to look at, from a far, far distance. Thanx much for the two views.
Those are beautiful photographs. Well done.
I have some experience with porcupines, tried eating one once, never again. Tasted like a bad cut of meat marinated in Pine Sol. Before that my black lab ran into one while I was fishing in CO. A trip to the vet resulted but all ended up well.
