Good one!!!

Here in South Jersey, my work commute is through the Pinelands where I've had many an occasion to move turtles out of harm's way. Spotted, Stinkpot, Yellow-belly, Red-belly, Painted, Box, and Snapper. Snappers have to be lifted using your hands as far back on the shell as possible. They should be called Stinkpots, IMHO.

Does it harm them to pick them up by the tail? And if you do hold them away from you legs, they will try to get you.

That's a good shot. Last week I saw a dead turtle on the road at the conservation area from probably being run over. Of course that is only an assumption but if it had been killed that way it had to be intentional because they don't dart in front of your car like a deer. I saw a live box turtle on the road and I stopped to remove it so it wouldn't meet the same fate.

I never tried to pick them up by the tail. I've moved some seriously large ones and they were unable to stretch their necks back far enough to bite me. They do some hissing and straining but they haven't been able to reach back far enough.

These are great, Jerry! That looks like a pretty hefty Snapper. I often stop to move turtles off the road so they don't become pancakes. They are rarely appreciative, but I do it anyway. Yeah, I've seen what are undoubtedly purposely ran over turtles...a shooting offense in my opinion!
