Nikon Nikkor old AF VR 80-400mm 4.5-5.6 worth selling?

I have the old version of the Nikkor 80-400mm with the M/F ring on the barrel. And that ring has always bound a little before it would lock, and when it hunts it is pretty loud. I have gotten good shots of Hummingbirds, and other wildlife with it, and I have taken good care of it. I'm wanting to buy a Nikon 70-300mm fairly new model but I have limited funds and don't want to buy a Tameron or Sigma lens. I know that the Nikon lens does not depreciate much and was wondering what the price difference between selling the 80-400mm and getting a 70-300mm would be? Or about?

I have the Nikon 80-400mm AF-S VR (2013-present). It's a big improvement over the original Nikon 80-400 AF-D VR (2000-2013). It has much improved autofocus and vibration reduction. I also have the Nikon 70-300mm AF-S f/4.5-5.6G IF-ED (metal lens mount). It's an excellent lens. It's amazing what Nikon was able to do for $550. There are so many variations of the Nikon 70-300mm now. I would recommend getting one that has a metal lens mount like the Nikon 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6E VR AF-P. You have to watch out with the compatibility of the new AF-P lenses however.

If you get an AF-P lens check this compatibility chart

I have sold cameras and lenses to Robert's Camera. Their UsedPhotoPro division gives very good prices on used equipment. You might check with them to see how much they would give for the 80-400mm.

There are different 70-300 models. The two I know is with the VR and the older model focus engine may break. I got my fixed some years ago. I believe that the new model have this problem solved. In the past I tried the 80-400 if I remember right it was slower than the 70-300

I owned the older 80-400, but was disappointed in it, especially at the longer settings. This past winter, I decided to get the newer 80-400 VR. Glad I did. It's sharp at any setting, and I use the VR feature for hand holding shots when needed. I paid @ $500 for the older 80-400, and sold it for what I paid.

I bought the lens from Used Photo Pro (Roberts). It wasn't cheap, coming in @ $1400, but it's much lighter than my 200-500 f/5.6, and it came with the RRS collar and foot. Yes, I give up 100mm at the long end, but I haven't had any problems in post-processing.

I owned a couple of versions of the 70-300; the best was the G VR. It was lightweight, and the AF was great. However, I didn't like giving up 200mm at the long end. The newer 80-400 has better VR (IMHO) than the older model and it doesn't "hunt" nearly as much.

Hi deerpark243, I have a used (by me) 70-300 AF-S VR that is in very nice condition.... (I have two of them) I'd like the 80-400, if you are interested in a trade let me know...my opinion is it would be a fair trade for both of us. Mine has a padded soft case, caps and hood, works fine and takes great pics. Anyway, have a great day! mike

There are a number of Nikon 70mm-300mm lenses on the market, the latest is the AF-P version, which is probably the best (very fast and silent focusing, and sharp even in the 200mm-300mm range). I am not sure which cameras you have but this latest lens is not compatible with all Nikon DSLRs, or you may need to upgrade the firmware of some of the older cameras. The FX version is built a little better than the DX version. It is currently out of stock at B&H Photo but at $600 it is a bargain. If your camera is compatible, I would avoid the older versions and get the latest technology, the AF-P version, which also pairs well with mirrorless if you decide to go that route at some point.

Thanks for the replies, they have been very helpful in making a decision. For those who wanted to know what cameras I have is the Nikon D810, D3, and yes a D70s. I know I’m behind the times, I would love to get a D850, but my pockets aren’t that deep. The D810 seems to do a good job.

I once owned that lens but sold it after I went to the Sigma 150-600. I was very happy with the lens but did not need two that covered the same distance.

I have the soft case, front and rear caps, hood, and collar, all in great condition. Is the 70-300 a 2.8?

I'm guessing you are replying to me... The AF-S and AF-P lenses I have are AF-S F4.5-5.6 G ED VR, AF-P DX F4.5-6.3 ED, one with VR, one w/o. I wish any of them were 70-300 F2.8.

better to use "quote reply", that we know who should answer.

Yes, I was talking to you, sorry about that. What I wanted is 70-300 2.8 used, and I was going to put down the money I was going to make on the 80-400 I know there is still a big price difference. That's what I want to do.
