Interesting story on this. While I was out taking these photos I realized I was standing in a marijuana patch. Up until then i didn't know that Hemp grows wild in Nebraska, and got a little concerned I was in someone's illicit drug field. If you look closely at the photo there are some Hemp plant up near the dock that are visible.

I can’t attest to the accuracy of this, but back in the 60’s we were told that during WWII the government cultivated hemp for the purpose of making rope for the war effort. Supposedly they planted it throughout the Midwest along rail road right of ways. Apparently controlled (ahem) burns were conducted to get rid of the “weed” ya’ know to keep people from making, uh rope.
