I can’t attest to the accuracy of this, but back in the 60’s we were told that during WWII the government cultivated hemp for the purpose of making rope for the war effort. Supposedly they planted it throughout the Midwest along rail road right of ways. Apparently controlled (ahem) burns were conducted to get rid of the “weed” ya’ know to keep people from making, uh rope.
