I've used MAC since the mid-90's.

the desktop items are never automatically copied to an external drive. Never have been.

You can drag One folder, or select all of the desktop folders/items and drag them into (on) the external drive icon and then they will copy over.

Time of transfer/copy depends on the size of the folders and files. If you have folders with a lot of images it is usually wise to copy them one at a time. Reduces the chance of errors/problems and usually goes faster.

I would suggest copying each item on its own....then you know for sure it has been transferred.

My thought is that the desktop icons are simply links to their parent folders and files, duplicates in a sense, so backups don’t include those.

But they do not appear in the main hard drive icon anywhere, otherwise; they would have been copied and I would not be asking for help.

Same for me using Mac since mid 1990's.
New hard drives are not recognized by my 2008 MBP.
I will use one of my old extn h.d's to copy my master photo file (20,000+ high res images)then, connect the 2 drives to copy.

I called Apple and they were baffled, like I discovered a new problem issue !

Complete and reliable backup of your Computer, OS, and Data is a multi layered process.
On a Mac, Apple has made basic Data backup pretty straightforward with Time Machine there are tutorials on how to use it. BTW Folders on your desktop should be backed up but that will reside in the Mac's 'Desktop' Folder.
Double check that.
You can Backup EVERYTHING (including the OS and all applications) by making a Bootable Clone of the Hard Drive--- nothing better than Carbon Copy Cloner for that. It can even schedule incremental backups automatically if you like.
If you ever have a big problem, there is no better thing to have than an up to date clone.
Part of ANY backup plan is off site backup, be it the Cloud or a separate location.
In addition to general backup, most photographers also specifically backup their Photo files and archive separately.

NONE of your actual files should be stored in the Desktop Folder. They belong under Computer Name/Startup Drive Name/Users/Username/ and then under one of these:

/Documents

/Downloads

/Movies

/Music

/Pictures

If you want FAST ACCESS to a file or folder, make an alias of it and put that on the Desktop so you can click it and open the file easily. To make an alias, highlight the file, RIGHT CLICK or CONTROL CLICK on the file, and choose Make Alias from the dropdown menu. You can put the alias anywhere you want to, and it will usually open the original.

First, I am not familiar with Apple and Time Machine. I know about PCs and some Linux.

I would ask why you think the info is not in the backup. Can you find the other files in the backup? In the PC world, you would look in the backup to find the various Users. Find your User name and drill down until you find Desktop which contains the desktop data and program shortcuts. I would think Apple would have a similar structure.

Also, it is not true that you have to Clone a drive to provide a backup. All the backup programs I have seen allow one to backup the files and generate a System Image. You can take a blank drive and restore a System Image to it and have it run like the original.

Stuff on the desktop is copied…you'll find it at…external drive name/Users/Your username/Desktop. If you were to boot from that external drive and log in with the same user name it would still show on the desktop.

they would not appear in the HARD DRIVE icon. They 'live' on the desktop.

I don't understand this since I'm not an Apple person. Sorry, I can't help.

what appears in the DRIVE icon (hard drive) is the system/applications. You CAN load FONTS on the hard drive or on an external drive if you use a font management program, so that is an option.

The hard drive contains what is required to operate the Mac, and all applications loaded.

Peter, all your files are there if you copied or Cloned your Hard Drive.
Go to: open your Hard Drive name (example:Macintosh HD) > scroll down to Users > open Your Name Folder > scroll down to Desktop > open and there are all your Folders alphabetically, followed by individual files alphabetically that were on your Desktop.

very true...

your best bet is to make an appointment at your local APPLE store and speak with a tech....they can walk you through all of it.

Peter, lastly… when you call Apple Support on their 800 # (no charge), ask for Mac Support, ask tech for “Screen Share” support (important) - if the Tech seems baffled after looking at the issue, they will usually transfer you to a Tier 2 Tech. (I worked as an Apple Tier 1 support person - Apple Support Techs are never ‘baffled’, they will transfer to higher Tier if they’ve not seen that new (to them) issue before! You can request a Tier 2 at any time and they have to transfer. You may have to hold a bit though.
