Question about Nikon support.
My girlfriend has been offered a Nikon D5000 from a friend. As I am a Canon shooter my question to the Nikon people on this forum is: does Nikon still support this camera.
My friend has the D5000; it has been a faithful camera for many years and never needed Nikon support. However, I would not pay more than $30 for it. The D5100 (which I bought) is much better, and the D5300 much better than the D5100.
According the the Nikon site the item has been discontinued. I'd suggest you contact them and ask if maintenance and parts are still available.
Well your friend shouldn't pay a lot for the D5000 and so if it breaks in the future it's not worth to have it repair so Nikon support is a moot point.
The D5000 dates to 2009. The Nikon cameras do not map exactly to Canon on model to model nor product line to product line, especially not in models from older years. The D5000 is an 'advanced' model, more like the EOD 10D to 90D line of cameras. But, it's long discontinued and unsupported, just like Canon models of that period. The D5000 is a cropped-sensor model, but unlike Canon, it can use both Nikon DX (EF-S style) lenses and full-frame lenses (Canon EF). At 12MP, the camera is similar in resolution to the EOS 50D or EOS XTi.

It is a gift. Leave it as that.
The brand, whatever, is of no concern. An older camera? So what? It is better than nothing. I pass down my cameras when I get something else.
Something better exists? So what. It is a gift.
It will need repair one day? Wait until it does, THEN check your options.

Never look a gift horse in the mouth.

This will be a great opportunity for you to demonstrate your patience, consideration, and support to your girlfriend. The D5000 is quite serviceable, but can be awkward to learn and use.

If it's free don't worry about it.

Amen.
THe D5000 whether USA or Grey is fully supported by your local landfill. Enjoy it for however long it keeps on keeping on, then toss it.

If it works then accept the gift and consider this camera a great place for your girlfriend to start her journey in photography. If she enjoys it, she can upgrade to a newer camera later but if she doesn't then no money was wasted. If it breaks and she wants to continue then a newer camera can be purchased.
Check into beginner photography classes in your area. Check the local community college for hobby courses or the local camera shop.
I hope she enjoys her photography journey.

I believe ALL Canon cameras can use ALL EF lenses and the APSC ones can additionally use EF-S lenses.
At least all my APSC can use EF and EF-S from the original D30 to the 7D.

If it works & is free & comes with a lens or you can find a good condition lens cheap, take it. Most likely a manual for the camera could be found at the Nikon website under the support section.
