In March, my travel buddy, Sam King, and I did a loop through Arizona starting in Phoenix, up through Sedona, Grand Canyon, Monument Valley, Canyon De Chelly, Petrified Forest, then returning to Phoenix. In hindsight, I would not recommend visiting canyons rims during transitional weather seasons--we had strong winds all the time and, for 4 days straight, those winds were reaching 30-40 mph! But the adventurer in me still had a grand time!

First day we just traveled around the Superstition Mountains up by Canyon Lake as far as Tortilla Flats, then drove up along the Salt River as far as Saguaro Lake, stopping along the way at the several recreational parks. Blooms were scarce this early in the month, but the temps were quite warm.

I love your Saguaro moonshot. I just haven’t gotton around with playing with those. As a child I can remember seeing a lot of that kind in Arizona Highways magazine. The church photo is a wow, but is it a functional church? Looks as if they built it on the site of a long gone wooden structure and the original bell is on display in the front. I guess corrugated steel might be an answer for termites, but with no windows I can’t imagine being in there on a day like today 112 degrees in the shade… if you can find the shade! I envy your trip around the state great photo results, kudos. JohnV

Even before moving to Phoenix, some years ago, I subscribed for a while to Arizona Highways - an absolutely great magazine if one appreciated excellent photography of the sights - and sites - to be seen in Arizona.

The pictures are great; I have almost duplicates of several: the church, the lake, the saguaro. And, of course, some of the many other things attracting attention around the state - much to see and picture!

Great shots, dmeyer, with a lot of subtleties included.

Beautiful set. Probably lucky they aren’t blurry with those winds.

Beautiful shots of some of my favorite places. Wonder if you went inside the chapel, it has several images from Elvis and his movies, interesting. Thanks so much for posting, Cheers -- Dan

Just to clear things up a bit, the "church" is actually a movie prop called the Elvis Chapel. Way back, when western movies were popular, Hollywood build a western town, movieset, called "Apacheland" in nearby Gold Canyon. When the movie set burned in 2004, only two buildings were left standing, the barn and the chapel.

These two buildings were donated to the Superstition Mountain Museum where they reside today. The Chapel is called the "Elvis Chapel" because it was built for the Elvis Movie, "Charo". Weddings still take place in the Chapel upon request.

Now that clears things up! So glad you saw the post and could put the backstory on that chapel--thanks, Jack!
