No Tom Mix, Gene Autry or Gabby Hayes? These aren't on the list but Harry Morgan and Melissa Sue Anderson are.

Since tv western stars were chosen, WHY NO CLAYTON MOORE???

Agree with your additions, plus James Arness, Roy Rogers (my favorite when I was a kid), or Jay Silverheels, or Richard Boone, or ...

Still, it was an interesting list to look through

Okay, what is Paladin's first name?

My parents always told me that Paladin's first name was "Wire" because his card said, "Wire Paladin".

The "wire" in his card is a directive to telegraph Paladin at his hotel location should his services be required.

Of course it is. (His hotel was in San Francisco if I recall correctly.) But it was a good joke at the time.

While the order of western stars in the piece may be questionable, I can say that all were familiar to me. I would like to add a few of my early boyhood cinema favorites: Tim McCoy, Ken Maynard, Tom Mix, Buster Crabbe, Hoot Gibson, Lash LaRue, Rex Allen, Gabby Hayes among many others.

While we are on the subject, many of these earlier westerners can be found in the Amazon Prime Video series.

Also, I would like to enlist the aid of anyone who remembers a 40's western starring, I believe, Roy Rogers or Gene Autry and Gabby Hayes, in which the star is able to unmask a group of fifth columnist Nazis by suddenly calling out the Nazi salute to which they robotically respond, giving themselves away at the end. Does any older UHHer perhaps know the title and star?

Not sure but think it was Roy, I do remember the scene

It's a real conversation starter. Notice where John Wayne ended, and perhaps the biggest surprise was where Ward Bond was. For the fans of westerns, any of the 40 could be the number one.

For one, I really liked Ward Bond.

Where is Hopalong Cassidy? Who made this list anyway?

I think that's why I was never successful in movies.

I know what you mean. In the 1940s and 50s, everything was clean and beautiful. A few years later, they went in the opposite direction - to disgusting.

I wouldn't say they went to disgusting. It was more like reality. The Old West was grimy, dusty, and dangerous.

Seems like any actor who ever had a western movie role, even if it was just once, made the list. I agree with the missed names others here listed and I might even add Steve McQueen from "Wanted, Dead or Alive," Nick Adams from "The Rebel" and although listed, Chuck Connors played for many years in "The Rifleman" and "Branded."

How many great theme songs accompanied these TV shows. Remember "Have gun will travel reads the card of a man..." "What can you do when you're branded? Can you live with a lie..." and "Johnny Yuma was a rebel..."?

On the other hand, it was made up of a lot of Civil War veterans, so unlike the placid populaces of towns that we see in tv and movie westerns, the people had guns and knew how to use them.
