STOL Racing

Did you ever hear of STOL racing - short take-off and landing? These planes take off from a standstill in ten feet of less. Landing is also short, but not that short. Crazy.

It is now a race category at the national Air Races in Reno every year.

It's amazing what people than think up. I thought it would be interesting to have a "drag race" to see how fast a car could stop. I doubt there would be much interest in that, though.

Short takeoffs and landings are essential to bush pilots

The Yards are in short supply of ship anchors these days. Can't "stop on a dime" without a good anchor.

Just looked up the URL. Apparently there were high winds in the area at the time. From the blurb, the plane stalled at 300 feet. I am no expert, but I know enough to know that does not leave much room in regards to evasive tactics. (I had a glider course years ago.)

Rough for the family.

There was a young man there with his wife and kids, and he was killed doing this. It was in the news a few weeks back.

We used to drag race motorcycles from a dead start, race to a finish line but you had to break hard at the finish line. If you went over you were disqualified.

I've seen motorcycles racing at drag strips. Not something I would want to do. I used to ride a Honda Gold Wing - for comfort and silence. : )

Landing on a short runway is sometimes a necessity. STOL is a good and safe method when executed properly
