Well, it is worthless.

Just because of the speed, or for some other reason? A slow but reliable drive could be useful to incrementally accumulate copies of files as a backup, even if not as part of a batch backup system.

Had a similar experience with a ridiculous low priced tiny external SSD from Amazon.
Exact same experience you Showed full rated capacity BUT began overwriting original files...

Simply unusable IMHO.

Well, I left the drive work all night and part of this morning... Still 150 GB to go...

The write speed now oscillate between 1.x MB/s to 17 MB/s

When this is finally done, I will create a continuous back-up in order to write a 400 GB file in one go. Should be fun.

Let us know how long before the $30 drive eventually fails and all of that data disappears.

16 TB is a lot of data to lose at one time when the drive unexpectedly fails!

Ok, so now I am getting 60 MB/s using the back-up software... (AOMEI, free license)
Back-up size is about 950 GB.

Down to 19 MB....

Toss that puppy in the circular file and consider it a learning experience (if it seems to be too good to be true…). I wouldn’t trust my grocery list to that device, regardless of the size or speed.

Load your bank and credit card statements on this device and she will never know

All this virus fear is a bit overblown. A minimal precaution is needed, that's it. I have a tight firewall that intercept any communication hardware or software that are not authorized. The drive was scanned. Then after an initial test, I formatted it.

You imply that you are smart enough to defeat any ill intentioned hacker.

But if something seems too good to be true, it isn't.

If you were really smart you would not have fallen for the scheme in the first place.

I will try later...

Will have to wait a looooooong time.

I am transferring 500GB and it says... More than a day before the task is complete.

I guess this is only usable as a long permanent storage device, nothing else. There is space for a life time there... Same as the wait to write it all!

How is it connected to your pc?

I recall reading about a security breach in Iraq some years back, where an air-gapped system the CIA set up was compromised when soldiers used USB thumb drives that they bought in town from street vendors that were very inexpensive. Turned out the dupes who bought the drives (thinking they were saving a bunch of money) actually loaded software on the target computer that copied files to the thumb drive automatically, and when that drive was later inserted into a computer that was connected to the interwebs it automatically transmitted said files to outside systems.

Point is, while you think the drive might be a big bargain, you also might have loaded something nefarious onto your own computer.

That's the way Stuxnet destroyed Iranian centrifuges. Nowadays, common tactic. Just read where USB drives can be set up to fry a computer. Myself, always buy known brands and test with USB flash drive tester from www.vconsole.com. Also works on SD and CF cards. Readily identifies fake sizes - writes, reads, and compares.
