I got a notice from the town that my dog's license needs renewing. I'll have to go to the vet and get a copy of his rabies certificate. So many things have to be registered - at a cost - yet so many other things don't have to be registered.

My cat doesn't need a license. My chickens don't either, but there are sexist regulations concerning them. Roosters are more highly regulated than hens.
Every cat in the United States should be registered and chipped, so that when the little buggers crap on my yard, I might catch the crapper and charge the owner.

Good point I've never considered. Why are cats exempt from requiring a license?

It is a pretty nominal charge in most places. Here they charge more if your animal is not spayed/neutered, which I think is probably a good thing. Requiring rabies vaccine has been mandatory for many years because - well - you know - it prevents a disease that is very deadly and is much easier to prevent than to treat once you have it!
Had MANY cats going in my wife's flower bed. Got a live trap and several now reside elswhere. They should also be licensed just as dogs. Look at ALL the money the animal shelters are missing out on.
For the politicians to squander. We have a "traditionally all black" university here in town. Last year some incoming freshmen had to be quartered in local motels because the roof leaked and there was no hot water in one of their larger dormitories. The solution of the board of directors? Build a massive football stadium. Proving football... and idiocy are king in the south.
