If you're scanning slides and negatives, you can't scan RAW. TIFF is the only lossless format available to you. You can work with the TIFF files without any loss of quality in multiple edits and then convert to jpeg.

Also, software like topaz Denoise, Sharpen, & Affinity Photo convert my NEF raw files to tiff when choosing Edit In from LR. If you might do further edite, you might want to keep a tiff.

And the third anecdote of similar detail becomes dogma. Works that way in medicine as well.

Don't know what TIFF is, or why some of my files were saved as TIFF in Gigapixel, but the files were huge; probably good for printing murals.

That's why Gigapixel exists - It converts a jpg with its blow-up limitations and creates a version of the photograph that doesn't pixillate until the image is about 6x the size of the original jpg.

Handy if one is doing billboards.

Exactly! That's one of the reasons Gigapixel was created.

Billboards are only one of a host of reasons one would want to blow a photo up to larger than a jpg would allow. You might want to create a framed photo of an ancestor and all you have is a small 2x2 or 3x5 from which to copy. Gigapixel is a response to that need.

At the distance you'd normally view a billboard from, a typical jpeg image from almost any camera would be fine. Apple used to make billboards from iPhone photos before the cameras in them were as good as they are now.

Figured that.
Maybe some day in the far future I might consider it.

A good photograph is not explained with words, it just needs at least thirty megapixels.

Oh come on, you know that many years ago Paul, we were walking down that dark proverbial Highway searching alone in the dark wondering how we could make a Photo into a 40 by 60 Print to display on our Family Room's Wall, all of the while we were using Our 6-12 MP Cameras. Funny thing is, we actually did it. Look at the older Nikon and Canon Bodies that we shot with. As with everything in Life, sometimes More does not equate to Larger and Better. As I ponder what I used to do with less MP's, I wonder How did I ever attain my Goals. Now, I really do want to see how Fuji, Canon, and of course Sony and Nikon are going to perform with their 100 MP's?

Yeah, but saving to tiff is not as uncomfortable.

Billboards need FEW pixels. They're so far away from the road, they look like postage stamps. Up close, their printed dots are huge!

I never got up close and personal with one.
But they look good from the interstate.
