Beautiful shot. I still have that AE1 camera and some old lenses just can't seem to let it go.But no more film for me. I went digital even took a college class on photoshop and I am self teaching myself lightroom on the side. I will check out kit lens packages for now. My SX1 died a slow death and I have to have a second body I have 2 events books for Dec and I can't go with one camera, just not an option for a good work ethic. There are no second chances. I appreciate that you go back as far as I do. haha

I donated mine to a local non-profit a couple of years ago, good for them and a tax deduction. That's a commitment to digital!!

I am committed to digital somehow without looking it became a part time job. In less than 1 year between my birthday and Christmas I upgraded to the 9500 printer the size a real shocker for my husband. Full blown lighting kit that he purchased after an email from me to say this is what I want. Went back to college and booked work without trying. I have to say I have no issue with used lenses as well as new. I think it's fair to call it a collection. I love it I didn't realize how much I missed it. I don't miss the manual retouching. I just need to know how to tell people tackfully to put down their pink iphone camera, I don't think the bride wants that in her walk up the aisle shot with the wide angle to include her guests. If I'm not committed maybe they should come with the white jacket and xtra straps. I honestly donate clothes yearly, even an old car once, my 2 daughters donate too. It would have never crossed my mind to donate my camera, seems personal still. I took quite a few classes back then photo 1,2 etc airbrush and retouching and I'm still hanging on to a 30 year old enlarger. Thanks for the memories get the white jacket.
On a clear note I have decided I'm going with the 18-135mm kit. The reviews on the 18-200mm are just not as good as another reader pointed out. I have a 250 & 300 just not from the 18mm starting point.

I have a 18-135 that I really like. I can see where the extra length would be nice and thought about getting a Tamron that is I believe goes to 235. As to your question I would check around maybe Ebay and B&H Photo to see what a lens in that range would cost you. Kinda of sounds like you are trying to talk yourself into not buying it - and you are on the losing side.

I also vote for the 18-135mm. It is a bit lighter and easier to handle and it takes really good pictures. I am very happy with it. Very! the longer lens was too heavy for a walk around lens, at least for me and a lot of my friends have found their really long zooms to be just too much to shlep everywhere.

Beautiful pic of a strange looking bird. Blue Herons have always looked a bit prehistoric to me. But awesome timing & framing

I like the 18mm starting point I have a 28-135 but it doesn't suit my need as an everyday. I have the 70-300mm those are more for me for personal use. I want something more versatile for work

I had the 28-135, bought used on eBay. After a few months, I sold it for more than I paid, and bought a new 18-135. I'm not sorry I did, but the 28 had some nice features that the 18 does not have - Full Time Manual focusing and USM. The FTM is nice to have, because it lets you make finger-light minor adjustments to focus without having to switch the lens from autofocus to manual. Without FTM, moving the focus ring by hand, while in AF mode, could be harmful to the AF mechanism.

Plus, the 28 is an EF lens, while the 18 is EF-S, so it won't fit on that 5D I have my eye on... :)

I have the 28-105 ef lens which has the manaul option or af option. I am keeping that lens I just feel for events the 18-135 will be a nice choice for my work events.

Did I miss something? I thought pretty much all Ef and Ef-s lenses fit all the Canon line of cameras......

Yes, you did miss something. EF-S labeled lenses are designed to fit only the 1.6x crop factor family of Canon SLR cameras, which includes nearly all of them except the 1Ds and 5D line. EF lenses fit all cameras, but EF-S fit only the 'small' sensor cameras.

I got lucky. For once, I had the camera in burst mode, and I managed to get out of the car quietly enough to not scare the bird away instantly (like I usually do!). Right place, camera was ready. Used P and fast burst. As I said. Got lucky.

Didn't know that. Tnx for the heads-up. BTW I use old Canon FD lenses on my Canon 60D with an adapter, very well. Can't imagine There isn't a way to adapt the EF-S LENSES TO A 5DMK!!

Go to Adorama .com and look-up FD lens adapter, for EOS cameras. If you can't find them, I will look up the invoice I have with them for a part # . I have several for my FD lenses, and they work great. BTW, auto focus and F stops must be selected manually, but the results are great!!!
