I have a canon 6DmkII with a 24-70mm lens and 50mm and a canon M50mkII with a 15-45mm, 18-150 lens. I want to purchase a wide angle lens. What is your opinion a 16-35mm for the Canon 6DMKII or a Sigma 16mm lens for the M50mkII.

The EF 16-35 f4L IS is an excellent wide angle. Alternately, the 17-40 f4L is equally sharp and considerably cheaper but lacks IS.

I have the canon 16-35 and the 17-40. The 17-40 is sharper. And if I could have just one it would be the 17-40.
If you mean the EF 16-35 f/4L IS, this lens is one of my favorites, you'd get it your EOS 6DII. It's hard to get 'wide' on the 1.6x crop factor bodies. The EF-M 11-22mm is an option for the M50II, similar to the EF-S 10-18mm.

This was taken with the 17-40L. It’s SOOC from a Canon 5D3 (which has almost the same sensor as the 6D2) with no additional sharpening applied.

The 17-40L is a wonderful lens. The 16-35 f/4 is sharper, but the big benefit is the IS support. If adding to a camera with IBIS, look for a 17-40L for the price savings.
Thank you. I will start shopping for a used 16-35 f/4 .

For versatility I would go with the 16-35mm lens. I find primes very limiting unless there is some specific use that will be done over and over for years.
I have the Tamron 15-30 2.8 G2 and love it
The 17-40L is the way to go. Love mine.

the advantage of the 16-35mm 4 is it is an IS lens. The others aren’t (Canon mid wide angles zooms for EF mount). Ken Rockwell feels it is one of the sharpest zoom period. I do too. The sigma is fine as are a ton of other primes in that size.

I have a question. For some reason this has always sort of confused me. When one uses a ef-s lens such as the 10-18mm on a crop factor camera like the 80D,is the 10mm aspect of the lens really 10mm as in full frame or is it cropped to 16mm by the 1.6 crop factor of the Canon 80D ?

Yes, I bought a used 16-35 F4 L lens from MPB and it's like new and fantastic. You won't regret it.

The angle of view of the 10 mm (as seen by the crop sensor) is as a full frame sensor would see from a 16 mm.
