In looking into purchasing a mirrorless camera, I am struck by the amount of features/technology that (some) Olympus cameras offer. Am I right in thinking that other camera companies (i.e. Canon, Nikon, Sony) do not offer the degree of technology that Olympus offers? Examples... Live Composite, Focus Stacking, Live ND, Expressive HDR, Starry Sky AF, In-Body IS (others do offer this). (I'm especially impressed with Focus Stacking and Live Composite.) And if this assumption is true, why do the other companies not offer these technologies? Thanks all.

Both Panasonic and Olympus got started with mirrorless cameras in 2008. They had a head start! Canon and Nikon milked dSLR technology for all the $$$$ they could squeeze out of it. They were nearly a decade late to the party, and several years too late for me.

I cannot imagine spending up to $10,000.00 when I can do it all with my em10ii and a 100-300pany.
Of course it's not the new OM 1....YET.
When I pick up my Nikon I feel like I am trying to push it to perform.

I have transitioned from Nikon to the m43 and Olympus system over several years. I occasionally use my Nikon Z6 and D750 and an array of Nikon lenses but the other 98% of the time I use my Olympus OMd em1 mark 11 and 111, Lumix GX8, and Lumix GM-5. The image quality, build quality, advanced features, and compactness of the system is superb. I may add the new OM-1 eventually to take advantage of the incremental improvements in the tecnical features it offers. I recently posted a shot of fireflies and star trails on the hog that was captured using the Live Composite feature and the image I am attaching today is an in-camera focus stack from the Olympus OMd em1 mk III with a 60mm macro lens. It is processed in LR and passed through Topaz. I should have dusted the horsefly off before I photographed him. He is alive but barely moving; a victim of my cat I think. I highly recommend the Olympus (OM) system.

It is only a matter of patent rights and time before others have what Panasonic and Olympus/OMDS has in technology. Some things are harder to scale up also like high level IS. More size and mass has to be dealt with. If you are considering 4/3rds, and do a fair amount of video, also look at Panasonic. All Olympus/OMDS and Panasonic lenses fit 4/3rds bodies for all basic functions. As far as I am concerned, Olympus/OMDS makes the best still camera in the OM-1 (with good video also but not primary). In the future, there is going to be a 33mp 4/3rds camera body brought out by OMDS. Again, it is only a matter of time. Although the bodies for 4/3rds, APS-C, and FF are all similar in size and weight at this time, the size, weight, and cost of the lenses is much cheaper for 4/3rds lenses. For the size, weight, and cost, I think your money will be well spent on Olympus or Panasonic.

Great focus stacking...I'd like to try it myself, I guess it's not that easy.

I deserted my two Nikons (D80 and D7000) for a G9 specifically for the in camera focus stacking (known as "Post Focus"). I got many other features, like 5 axis stabilization, High Dynamic, iDynamic, and so many more I will never be able to learn them. Download the Lumix G9 342 page manual for details.

Has the OM cameras gotten the AF improved to be as good as class leading DPAF II? All the other features are amazing and are tempting. But for state of the art class leading AF DPAF II with the various tracking capabilities will ensure sharp focus with all the other amazing features.
Once the AF steps up the size and other features will be the perfect package.
So how is the AF?

The AF is nearly as capable as the best full frame cameras for birds in flight" and surpasses some full frame cameras in focus abilities. Of course we are talking about the new OM-1 camera. The abilities of the E-M1 mkII and mkIII are still good, but not at the same level as the E-M1X or OM-1 (with the OM-1 as the best). Also, both the E-M1X and OM-1 AI (artificial intelligence) that identifies subjects and focuses on the subject no matter where it is in the frame - with no help from the photographer. Absolutely amazing to see it at work. With the better focusing sensor, the OM-1 utilizes it better than the E-M1X.

I travel lots with Lindblad-National Geographic on shipboard excursions to wonderful places. My 10th trip-p with them was a 2 week trip in the Baja and I was with several photographers who had become friends over the years. Every one of them had recently switched to Olympus mirrorless, mainly from Canon DSLR equipment, and they all loved it--even though they were still learning. (Of course I wish I could get their pricing.) I just took my 11th trip a couple of months age to Patagonia and learned that a couple of them at least had gotten the OM-1 and thought it was by far the best camera they had ever used--PERIOD. I'm still using my Nikon 850 and love it, also have an older Sony A7 II which I don't like because of the confusing menu set up. But I think the switch to Olympus is in my future.

I have read that DSLRs are still substantially outselling mirrorless ILCs.
It was a few days ago.

I have been shooting with Olympus micro 4/3 camera & lenses since 2014. In terms of quality, technology, build, affordability, weight and ease of learning, Olympus is unsurpassed. Yes, I have other cameras, but they haveeith been traded in or are collecting dust on the shelf.
