Is it possible to recover a photo image from an SD card like you can from a hard drive?

There IS software out there... My best friend's son who ran a data recovery service in FL recovered my brother's SD card after he mistakenly deleted the images... Hopefully, just your directory locations were erased, not the actual contents. Google recovery software. Don't reformat the card.

Yes, try SanDisk RescuePRO. There are various versions and a free demo you can download. It's saved my hide several times. There are other programs but this has always worked best for me.

What brand card?

If it happens to be SanDisk look into their RescuePro software - often available for free depending on how long you have had the card.

I have never had to use that service, but I was thinking more along the line that if it was a SanDisk card of recent vintage it could be free to use.

But knowing it works with any brand is great information - thanks for sharing that.

Some SanDisk cards I've bought did come with a free 1-year license code that you can input after you download the software (which I've used), but I've also bought some of their cards that didn't include that freebie.

The code is good for a year after you activate it, so if you get additional codes don't loose them because you can use the spares sequentially. As I recollect my codes were somewhere on the blister packs holding the cards (in very small type I might add).

Also on some cameras the program will work even after the card has been reinserted into the camera and formatted. On others the formatting overwrites the existing files and nothing is recoverable.

Lexar has a free program also. Beware of so-called "free" programs not sponsored by card manufacturers. Not so free.

Recommended some time ago, right here on UHH was Piriform Recuva.
Free to download/use
I've used it a number of times and works great.

Great suggestion.
I have used Rescue Pro occasionally and had some good results.

These recover programs only work if you stopped saving to the card. New saves will overwrite.

Also recommend Recurva, freeware. Try a quick scan first, but don't get discouraged if it finds nothing. Then try a deep scan, sit back, and let it work.
