Hope you left the second one alone, since he's definitely a snapping turtle! I've helped them cross a roadway many times, but they always try and bite me. Plus snappers get big -- the largest I've seen was over a foot in length, but they can get much larger than that.
Hard to tell from this young specimen, but it looks more like a common rather than a alligator snapper to me.
