Many times people post asking about off the beaten path things to photograph and other questions about the locations they are going to visit. Wouldn’t contacting that city’s Chamber of Commerce and/or Visitors Bureau be a good idea? Better to get ideas from people who live there, than from someone who has only visited there?
The same with visiting foreign countries. Wouldn’t contacting the US Embassy in that country be a good way of getting well informed ideas, information and suggestions?

I would expect the Visitor's Bureau to direct people towards the more obvious sights in the area. For more off-the- beat ideas, try Googling for local photographers or photo guides or see if their are any photo workshops in the area. Their websites will give you some ideas although it may mean some sleuthing to figure out the locations.

Most chambers of commerce, and even visitors' guides are built around entries of entities which are members or which pay to be listed or featured. Lots of really good destinations are not included.

Of course, sometimes residents can become jaded by local attractions, even really good ones. So my suggestion is to be as comprehensive as possible when researching a destination.

Try asking the Chamber and the Bureau about what lenses to bring, making sure they consider any crop factor and use of image stabilization.

Rolling on the floor laughing!

Good one. (UHH insider joke)

Amen to that. Most of "officialdom" in a capitalist economy will direct you to places and activities that encourage or require you to empty your wallet! Economic activity is great, but not necessary for a good time (unless you're in Las Vegas...).

A certain amount of research in different venues, followed by a bit of "blindly wandering around," is in order. Many of the quirky places I've been and enjoyed were happy accidents like this one on planet infrared Ektachrome back in 1976. It's the ruins of an old fort near Charleston, SC.

What's your chances of talking to someone at the chamber who is an avid photographer. Probably slim and none. You had a better chance using Google maps. I'll keep asking here. Every question asked here gets lots of replies from photographers who have been there and done that.

Google is good as well.
Some of us actually have lived in areas being asked about and likely will be better than the chamber or what ever.
