This is the time of year in Southern California that I enter into the "doldrums" for bird photography. Most of the migrating birds have moved on north. Particularly noticeable by their absence are the many ducks that winter here. Now all that we have left on most of the community ponds are the Mallards and Mallard Mongrels. Have just finished processing the remainder of shots from this winter on various trips to local ponds.
I will wait the ducks' return in the fall.
All of these were shot with a Canon R5, 600 mm f/4.0, handheld. Minimal cropping, small amount of vibrance added, BG darkened slightly, run through Topaz DeNoise AI.
Excellent series. Love the first one.
Very NICE series ! especially for handheld 600 f4 ......entering the doldrums here in Fla. also.......thanks for sharing

Thank you. Just after taking a bath. After watching this pair for awhile, it became predictable when he (or she in another set of pictures) was going to rise up and flap .

Thank you. Handheld with the tripod foot rotated upward so I held the tripod foot, held the lens just above the water line, used the rotating LCD screen to acquire the subject, used the eye tracking focus to keep focus and pressed the shutter. Not as difficult as it sounds. 1/3200 SS helped.

Thank you. These ducks, while not "tame", are accommodating to people and to me-the photographer.
Number 1 is sure proud of himself!
Love those ducks! Great series.
Thanks for sending them North.
Mike

These are all wonderful, bajadreamer. I particularly like the Wigeon and the Ring-necked shots. Fight your way through the doldrums and Fall will be here again before you know it.
