Hello gentle people:

I am thinking of buying a travel tripod that can serve as my one & only tripod. I want to be able to do macro as well as Astro photography with this tripod. I will use it with my Canon R6 with couple of telephoto lenses. I want to stay less than 4lbs in weight and size must be small enough to fit in carry-on luggage. I am thinking about Manfrotto Befree GT XPRO Carbon Fiber Travel Tripod with 496 Center Ball Head. For the money I am planning to spend is this a good rig or would you recommend another alternative.

Wishing you the perfect shot :)
Thanks

I’d look at Really Right Stuff Ascend. Very pricey but as usual you get what you pay for.

Well, these are the factors you must look at before you purchase a tripod.
1.) How tall does the Tripod open up to and how tall are you.
2.) Do you want a carbon- metal tripod or aluminum?
3.) Do you want a Tripod with a Pan and Tilt Video head already mounted on the tripod?
4.) What is the total weight you are going to be putting on the tripod?
5.) What type of protection does the Tripod come with in other words does it have a case?
6.) Warranty on the Tripod
7.) How much are you going to spend on a Tripod?
8.) Weight of the Tripod

I have a Sirui SH25T Tripod and it came with a 75mm Video Tilt and Pan head which can hold a Professional Video Camera of close to 50 pounds, came with a black vinyl padded case along with a 6-year factory warranty.

I upgraded my Monopod to a Sirui P204SR with legs and there is a table tripod built into the monopod. Height of this unit is just under 6' tall with round locking legs not the snaps. This also comes with a factory 6-year warranty along with a padded factory case.

One thing you will have to remember do not purchase a cheap tripod, they do not stand up under heavy usage and the factory warranty is around a year. Plan to spend on a tripod between $200 - 300 without a head and around $450 - 600 for a Tripod with a good head and a good factory warranty. B&H, Adorama and even eBay has good deals on new Tripods and Monopods. One thing Sirui requires a sales slip to startup your factory warranty. Be careful some dealers on eBay will not give you a sales slip and your warranty from the factory is out the window .

I forgot to add that my Induro travel tripod has a mechanism to lock the center column. It also can be removed, and I did remove it as I wanted as much stability as possible. For a travel tripod a center column can be a benefit. Forr my series three and four tripods, they have no center columns and are much more stable. Avoid a center column feature if you can.

You asking for a tripod that is good for macro photography AND use with telephoto lenses. The tripod should be light weight too. You do not mention whether your telephoto lenses are 100mm or 600mm (makes a big difference.)

It is quite possible that you will not find a tripod that is suitable for everything.

For my micro 4/3 set-up I have a MeFoto Road Trip. It is light, and easy to pack. I use it frequently for macro photography. For this tripod I have a short and regular center column. With the short column I can get the tripod quite close to the ground. I also have an Utra platy which brings the camera essentially to ground level. The MeFoto tripod is fine for my needs. The ball head is a bit small for a large camera and Large lens were a Gimbal head may be in order.

I also have a very nice Manfrotto tripod which is portable but considerably heaver than my MeFoto. I use it mostly for studio work but it is fine for road trips too. I have 3 types of heads: ball. 3 axis, and Gear. The Gear head is great for studio and macro work.
:
Both the head and tripod must be chosen for the task at hand.

My wife and I both have this Oben model

Carbon Fiber" weight 2.5 lbs; 12 inches; 12 inches collapsed. Used extensively outside and in the US. Have been in our carry-on or back pack. Bought the first one 3 years ago for ~ $130, the second on ebay for ~$80

At the top end, Really Right Stuff has a new sturdy travel tripod with an integrated head. Light, sturdy, smooth, easy to clean and short enough for a carryon. A couple of Italian makes are excellent and now less expensive than RRS. I have a Benro, which is much less expensive carbon. A Chinese knockoff. It is old enough that the particular model isn’t made any longer. It slips. I have always needed to be careful with slipping and needing to tighten a joint after setting the tripod. But it is sturdy, holds a weight on a hook for decent stability, and has kept clean.

That being said, I travel very light and have generally used a table top RRS tripod for travel. For every one time that I have used the Benro, I have used the RRS table top ten times because of the ease of carry. It has been throughout Europe, China, Japan and on many a hike. I shoot a D850 with heavy lenses and a series of Panasonic micro 4/3 over the years and the RRS handles both with ease.

I would recommend since you already have a tripod why not upgrade to a Monopod with feet that will support your camera and is lightweight and can hold 20 plus pounds. Look at the Sirui P204SR monopod with a built in table tripod included. This will give you the both of two worlds. A table tripod that handle a video head and a monopod that stands up by itself plus you an rest your feet on the legs to keep it sturdy.

You ask for what every photographer ideally wants. Lightweight, compact, stability? Please let us know if you find it. It would be greatly appreciated. Everyone here has their favorites to swear by and are tried and true. You may have to forgo some features to find what you need for this specific occasion. Also don't forget other features such as, leg locking mechanisms, material, durability ratings since you want this to be your only tripod.
You may be dreaming but I like the way you think.
I own 5 currently that suit my needs and can't remember how many others through the years. Good luck.

I am happy with my Sirui tripod and Sirui monopod. Have everything I need plus I also purchase a Magnus VPH 20 Video tilt and pan head. This time I spent under $160.00 for everything. This was for the mo opod and video head. B&H and eBay specials.

Gene51 advice is from a professional end. Heavier is better. And heavier is more expensive. If you go cheaper, you will need to add to it in technique to make it more stable. A cheaper tripod can work with those techniques but there will probably be fewer keepers than with a heavier (and more expensive) tripod.

I have following tripod: manfrotto 190 pro- changed about three times the head, meme, fotopro E6 eagle series. Manfrotto is Not the best but I got long exposure done, fireworks....at the moment I use it with an old used foba head-hold any heavy camera lens. It’s heavy.
The meme I don’t remember. The fotopro is one I love. It’s smooth to adjust and not as heavy as my manfrotto.
I didn’t know what kind of tripod is good for my use and needs. I bought the fotopro over eBay and at the same time the price went up, too.

Carbon fiber is desirable for suppressing vibrations better as well as lighter weight. Consider buying used and obtaining higher quality than your original budget allowed.
