I wonder how many present bird watchers were into birds before the advent of modern telephoto camera lenses.
A week ago I bought Tamron 100-400 and joined the birders' tribe 😊

1980s. I used binoculars decades ago long before I had a digital camera or long telephoto lens. My hands were busy with ID guide books, so I rarely carried a (film) camera while birding. And had no SmartPhone Bird ID apps. In the past at least the terms
birder watcher and
birding had little to do with photography.
For what it is worth, I just got a used Sigma 150-500mm f/5-6.3 telephoto zoom lens a couple weeks ago. Using it efficiently will be a learning curve.
I've read that bird watching is one of the fastest growing hobbies especially for retirees.
I really wasn't into bird watching until I retired to Arizona 3 years ago. I am now hooked

That is a cool camera, first no AA filter FX camera I believe. I use my Sigma lens with my Pentax cameras, should be the same optical formula but with a different camera mount. Since I have arthritis and also have to sit most of the time while shooting, I bought a gimbal head for my Gitzo tripod. Two learning curves at once.
I got into it after buying a 500 f4 lens.

I bought my first copy of Field Guide to The Birds: Eastern Land and Water Birds in 1969. Along with a pair of Bausch and Lomb binoculars.
Well a neighbor had a large outside aviary down in Calif. I was about 5 and was fascinated by all the lil Parakeets in there. They were nesting & raising young ones & so much to see & so many colors...I was about the only kid they let go watch their birds alone because I did not try & make them fly.
Then my grandparents lived in an Almond Orchard! Talk about birds all over! I used to lie on the slanted outside double doors to the basement & just watch all the birds around me! Only one I truly remember was the Northern Flickers. Ever see a dozen & more at the same time? Wow I was hooked for sure! I often fell asleep out there it was so comfortable, they always knew where to find me. that was 74 years ago!

Great story! I can almost see you on the cover of Boys Life!
Me. In those day we used binoculars. The camera was our eye and memory.
