Thank you all for your helpful comments and suggestions, I have 3 of these units they are about 15 -20 inches square and weigh about 30 lbs each they are big units, I also have a heavy-duty variable speed controller if I plugged my tester into it and adjusted the outgoing ac to lets say 30- 50 volts then it would be safe and would convert AC to DC.? On the battery charger, I use anywhere from 10-35 amps this process is a dead short that is controlled by the amount of electrolyte (washing soda) I put in the water, about 1 Tbsp per gal of water or less. I hook it up and leave it on for 3-5 days to a time.

s, TECHNICAL DETAILS of operation..............

Still called a volt meter when it measures voltage.

Surprised you didn't how magnetism plays a role...........

50 years of being an Electronics Engineer, I know how meters work.)

Gotcha beat. Got a degree in Physics in ‘66

Cool!!! You do!

Then you know how watt meters work also.

If you lowered the voltage and converted to DC it would work.

It would not be safe.

Please stay with the method that you are familiar with and that has worked for you.

I collect cast iron cookware I clean it using a form of electroless Like reverse electroplating in that I use a 12 volt battery charger to remove rust, paint, and old cooked on grease from antique cast iron pans. The battery chargers don't last very long so I want to make a heavy-duty one and I think this is a old transformer can anyone give any guidance on this I am familiar with 110-220 having wired my home and helped others with theirs, but I am not an engineer. I am interested in positive constructive information thanks.

Why not use a heavy duty battery charger like they us on autos, it has all the components you are asking about, set to a low voltage. Do you use salt in the water ? is so try a very small amount of white vinegar it help speed up the process
I have done this using a trickle charger set to 6v and salt water it only too about 3 hrs to remove rust from an old ratchet , but it did also remove the plating.

Heh...great thing restoring old stuff.
But use more modern...safer equipment to do it with.

Looks like a rectifier, which was used to convert ac to dc may have been used for a motor exciter, what you have is a paper weight.

Both of the meters are voltmeters. But yes that just a recfifier bridge that uses selenium rectifiers which are not used any more today.

Search for Lab Power Supplies on Amazon. Plenty of options under $100 that should do the job for you, and be more reliable than a cheap battery charger.

All d’Arsenval meters are current meters. Voltage meters are current meters with a series resistor.

But you’re right that meters designed to measure current directly would be labeled with Amps.

So all digital meters are voltmeters? They always do the A/D conversion from a voltage regardless they are measuring current or resistance.

I am convinced, I am going to shelf this idea of using rectifiers to clean my cast iron, I will buy a new battery charger I usually get a middle price charger for around $120.00 and I get about 1 year out of them. I have put new diodes in them and got more out of them sometimes. Thank you all for your concern and helpful ideas. I think I will see if I can sell the rectifiers to help buy a new charger.
