Generally good advice, but IMHO you need to get on a waiting order list NOW as the Z9 may NEVER be more readily available. It may be in short supply for years. Nikon does not have the manufacturing largess as Canon or Sony.

No one here in UHH knows how long the chip shortage and other supply shortages may last, no one.

Yes rent one if you can, but with shortages, that may also be a tough call when that will be possible.

Get in line now with an order and keep looking to borrow or rent one for a trial. Keep your D850 in good shape to get the best value when the time is right to sell or trade.

Cheers and best to you

Just thinking if the resources like chips and other supplies were readily available, Nikon would not be in the back order position seeing as Sony and Canon are in the same situation.

Please understand I am not a hater, just a guy that is not willing to keep chasing the next big thing. I understand what people are saying about the Z9, doesn't matter if it is video or photography. Here is what I had to think about (for me), regardless of the frame rate with photography. (1) When it comes to action shots, how do you know what shot you missed if the frames you have with your D850 captures that "amazing photo response"? The old cliché, "You can't miss something you never had". (2) I paid $3200 for my spanking new D850 and I had to wait 4-5 weeks for it to ship. I received it and have been extremely content with it. Not only, I am still learning about all the amazing features of the camera. (3) I have yet to have a client ask me if I was using a mirrorless and regular DSLR. Believe me when I tell you, if you don't know what you (not you) are doing, it wouldn't matter what amazing features the camera has, it really won't matter. I have yet to have 1 client ask me how many pixels does any camera I have used has. Aside from all of that, unless I am making money hand-over-fist to justify a $6000 price tag, and more money to invest in several lenses to absorb the cost, it is pointless for me to rush out and buy another amazing camera, just because. (4) Lastly my friend, who knows what other new camera Nikon is working on releasing by the time the Z9 even ships to me? Can you imagine a camera that can generate a 3D image that you can touch right in front of me. WoW! I am not saying to anyone that s/he should not go out and buy whatever s/he can afford, but I had to seriously ask myself, 'self', after weighing the upside and downside of making another huge investment, is it really worth it? That's my take on this.

If you have an arsenal of F mount glass, you may want to look into the mirrorless capabilities of the D780. I’m really liking mine.

This quote is rephrased from the Ken Rockwell's EOS R3 camera. I don't know why he didn't say the same thing in the Z9 review, a camera he compares / contrasts to the Canon R3 and Sony A1:

The [Nikon Z9] is for full-time shooters who shoot sports, news and action all day, every day. It's a smaller, lighter, faster version of the [Nikon D6]. The [Z9] is for things that move, move fast, [as well as being great for slower subjects in all kinds of weather].

Really, is a $6000 camera the solution you need, when you have two copies of the greatest DSLR body Nikon every created? You might investigate a rental rather than relying on hype and uncontrollable GAS.

You seem to have missed the reference to the pair of D850s are already on hand?

Actually a single camera/lens VR already exists and has been around for a while.
VR is 3D taken to the next level and includes full video.

What the D780 has in common with the Nikon mirrorless cameras is phase detection autofocus available with the sensor. This makes for much better video and live view photography where the focus is quick and precise, and focus tracking isn't herky-jerky as it can be with other Nikon DSLRs in these modes. I've read some opinions that the D780 is actually Nikon's best DSLR. The only downside I see is that you don't have the use of a viewfinder when taking video. You still have to rely on the screen on the back of the camera.

Well, you need to stop thinking......that's asinine. Absolutely no way would I trade TWO of the best DSLRs that Nikon has ever made for ANY mirrorless.

ASININE I don't think so. I was looking at the early Z models when they came out but was not interested they were not a step up from my D6 and D850. Then when Nikon released the specs on the Z9 it caught my attention. It had a faster shutter speed than my D6 (20 fps vs 16fps) and the sensor size on the D850 is 45 meg a pixels and the Z9 is also 45 meg a pixels. I have had the Z9 now for 3 months and no regrets. I have place an order for a second Z9. There is an learning curve on the software setup and the grid does not show up in the view finder only on the back display. I use the grid when I shoot panos.

I don't think so either. The D850 was arguably the best camera you could buy in 2017, and it still sells well enough to stay in Nikon's lineup. Nevertheless, time and technology march on. Sooner or later, almost everyone upgrades to something better. Some do it because the latest and greatest becomes a trophy, a bragging point, but others do it because newer technology has something to offer them. I'm sure the OP is well versed in what the Z9 has to offer over the D850, and it is a lot in many areas, much better video, much better maximum frame rate, uses the improved Z mount lenses and more. These things do matter to some people. The question is not whether to upgrade but when to upgrade. Personally, I think that when the features of the Z9 filter down to smaller and lighter, not to mention less expensive cameras, the itch to upgrade from a DSLR will get to a lot more people.

Add Z9 has far superior AF capabilities as well.

The D780 is clearly a DSLR. It has a "hybrid" sensor, the same type as in Nikon's mirrorless cameras, but it is still a DSLR.
