I have the same lens and under the circumstances you described getting these photos I think they look GREAT! We have a huge population of Red Tails up here and they come in many different colors (Morphs). Look it up on the computer and you'll be amazed at the variety. Once again, great shots!!!

Thanks snogodt67, I really appreciate that.

This guy was pretty high up in bright sunlight so I had to boost the fill light quite a bit to get any kind of detail on the underside and crop pretty drasticly to get a decent size image. When I spotted him(her?) I was driving and had a wide angle mounted. I had to pull off the road, switch lenses, jump out and then try to simultaneously focus, pan and raise my shutter speed (it had been set to 1/50 with the wide angle) ... unfortunately, I only managed to get it up to 1/640 before he was too high to get any more shots so these are not a sharp as they could have been, but I was pretty happy with the results under the circumstances. Tail looks pretty "red", but I'm not sure if that's what it is?

Good shooting. Definitely a Red-tailed Hawk.

Take a look at the circumstance, you weren't exactly in your blind waiting for Mr. Red Tail to show up.
These are excellent considering the circumstance. Most of mine look like this when everything (except me) is perfect. Well done. I think this is an exciting way to shoot.

Thanks tramsey ... and I agree, this is the "exciting" way to shoot!
