There is a disable function in the controls section of your menus. I had use of a Z6 in early spring and had this problem. You could call Nikon at 1-800-645-6689 or Norman Camera at 1-800 900-6676.

I suspect youre way off the mark, but would huuuuugely love to be proved wrong. I wonder if you just read a pdf manual for a camera you havent used.

Yes, theres menu lines that look very promising but are actually no solution when you dig into it with a camera in hand :-(

But again, Id loooooove to be wrong.
If youve actually done the fix, TIA !

I routinely find myself cussing my Sony a7riii for exact same reason. Sorry couldn’t help but misery sometimes appreciates company.

I had, have, the same problem on my 7200
It's not the thumb itself but the heal, part of the palm. It takes some getting used to.

I would love to do that to (on a Z9) but not sure there is anyway one can?

Using both Sony and Nikon maybe youll be pleased that I can assure you that the Sony joystick is MUCH more resistant to accidental activation. The Nikon is hyper sensitive by comparison.

I don’t find the Nikon joystick that sensitive. I have to push it with some effort to move the focus point. I also find it strange that you thumb would naturally go to the joystick unless you have small hands or your grip is unusual. I don’t have large hands and my thumb falls naturally on the AF-ON button. Now I have had problems with touchscreens and moving focus points inadvertently with my nose.

Norman camera helped me get through the controls menu to disable the joy stick when I had a Z6 loaner. I called them at 1-800-900-6676 and they guided me through the menus. I'm pretty sure Nikon provide the same help.

No offense, but the D7200 has a different set of controls than the camera(s) in question. It is a different joystick on the D500, D850 and Z6 & Z7. Not the menu selector button, where the palm of your hand may land.

I have owned all but the D850 and never have a problem moving the focus point with the joystick. But then, an old girlfriend in high school taught me long ago to watch where my hands landed!

With the Z6, so probably with the Z7, the joystick is directly below the AF button. On my other Nikon cameras the joystick is below and slightly left of the AF button. This makes it much easier to operate the AF button without your thumb hitting the joystick. If you don't own the cameras, look at pictures available online, before you make a final decision.

Hi

Steve Perry, whom graces us with his presence, it an expert on all thinks BBF and has good guides to most of the Nikon range of cameras. If there is a way to do what you want, he likely has published on it. You can also try sending him a DM or try his website.

Good luck

Simply comparing my cameras, I can sympathize with Nikon user complaints but find a similar complaint about Sony to be somewhat of a stretch. A user must be much more intentional with the Sony joystick. The Nikon is "guilty as charged".

Assign AF-On to Fn-1 and keep away from the dedicated AF-On button cuz theres no way to disable it.
