Hi, A friend of mine just asked what camera he should buy for his freshman daughter who has taken a photography class at school and has fallen in love with the game. I suggested a used camera but I'm not sure what to suggest. She seems to want a dslr.
I'm guessing price around 200-400 for body and a lens. I know that isn't much but I'm thinking there must be something used that will work. I will appreciate any help offered. Thanks, Mike
look at B&HCamera.com they have a great selection of new and used equipment and is supported by many members of this forum
Check B&H maybe T1 or T2 Canon, good start, Bob.
Micro 4/3. E-p3, E-pl2 used with a 17mm/20mm prime should fall into that price range.
Pentax K-x is in that price range now great low light performance and good IQ

Yes check in with B&H...in the used or re-furb section...a D5100 should last her til she's done with High School easily.
You can also try keh at
http://www.keh.com/And buy her a couple of REALLY good books on composition and general digital photography unlewss she has already chosen a given field; then address that field.

Thank you all. I'm going to put her on the trail and see what she finds. Thanks, Mike
a Canon T3i or T4i is a perfect camera for starters and beyond, about $800.
check out the nicon 3100 used or refurbished I have seen some great prices since the 3200 came out.
I bought my daughter an Olympus E-420 with a 14-42mm and a 40-150mm lens for her first DSLR. Light and small with excellent image quality. Its a great first DSLR setup for her, and has the additional advantage of keeping her hands off my Nikon lenses! $455 brand new for the setup, it was $330 for the kit with the 14-42mm lens and $125 for the 40-150mm.
